any ideas what steel old pick axe head would be?

Jackhammer bits tend to be S5 or S7 IIRC; silicon steel for the repeated impacts. Same sort of duty for a pick.

Find out the manufacturer, contact them and ask them, get given the runaround for a while then get told that the blend is proprietary and they won't tell you.
Or is that just spring mnfrs?

peculiar to volkswagen i think ... still reckon it would be EN45 as I think it's the standard european coil spring steel
S5 would be interesting ... got 2 of them .. no way to find that manufacturer as they are well rusted on the surface
