 New Makers

Is there something you always wanted to do but never knew how to do properly, or just wanted to see how other people would tackle your problem? Well, this is the place to post requests for tutorials.

:noggin: Old Hands

It's also a good place for experienced makers to come looking for ideas of things to do. And if you are already working on an interesting project and see a request here, why not make a tutorial out of it?

I think trond did a scandi sheath tutorial for the felleskap knife.

If not then I'll have a go when i get ahold of a camera and when i start making another sheath.

How about basic handle shaping, cos I'm having HUGE probs getting mine symmetrical :censored:

I mostly do mine my eye, working slowly with a belt sander, and get fairly accurate results (see the Easy Method Tutorial knife below)

http://uberlevel.com/link2image/br12409q03.jpg

But point taken, I will give some thought to it. I have been thinking of some device or method on and off for a while now.

How about basic handle shaping, cos I'm having HUGE probs getting mine symmetrical :censored:

I knock the corners off the shaft with a file or knife then use a strip of course ( 40-50 grit) cloth backed paper of about 80 cm.

Fix the shaft in a vice and use a shoe shine type action

As long as you took equal amounts off the courners, it gives a symetrical shape every time.

Symmetrical:

I recommend using files!
It´s slow work and you can check on result under a lamp often. Whatch it from every angle, several times.
I´ve tried a belt grinder once... never again.

(maybe off topic...)

Good advice! Hopefully this thread will stay more-or-less on topic and one of the more bored members can scan through it for ideas for tutorials.

Ah... Schwert would be your man for the braiding. About all I can do is nod vigourously and say "what he said". Kangaroo is much, much nicer to work with than cow even if you do have to cut the lace yourself.

How about one on putting together a traditional tanto? Mushi has the start of one in his great pics but I'd like to see a step by step.

2 questions how do you cut the lace evenly? do you have to get one of those cutters from pierce and tandy.
2/ where do you get kanga skin from?

A how to solder , or in my case "soldering for dummies" would welcome.

About braiding.

If this is ok? A link to a BCUK tread, where Schwert has put lots of info in, and you can find A LOT about braiding.

http://www.bushcraftuk.net/community/showthread.php?t=2176&page=1&pp=15

And I´m ordering the book mentioned today!

I've done all but the pictures. You can see (and comment on) the tutorial here (link (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?p=99926)).

There's nothing like a speedy response... And this was noth... Ah, never mind.

You can cut lace with nothing more than a sharp knife. I've tried it, it is quite doable, but I found it far too easy to stuff it up. Basically, you hold the knife solidly and vertical, using your thumb as a depth guide beside the lace as you cut it.

I've got both the Australian strander & the lace cutter, they get used for different things - basically, the lace cutter cuts from a hole in the centre of the leather outwards, the strander cuts from the outside. If you are careful, you can go round the skin a few times getting a continuous lace off it, but the strander is also useful if you want a central yoke where the laces are joined.

The roo skin came from Tandy, although they were out of it last month.

If by stick tang you mean like a Scandinavian Knife -try ZDP-189's Easy Scandi Tutorial.
Under "How To"s on the Front Website page.

Easy Scandi (http://www.britishblades.com/home/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=27)

or for hidden Tang (ZDP-189 again)

OK my first rookie question (how many can i have?)
done a fair bit of searching through the forum and cant find one that details putting a handle on a full tang.

Am i being dense? Is it really a matter of epoxying the whole lot (scales, pins etc.) together clamping it and leaving it? Or is there an order to which bits i stick in first?

Narsil ( whos walkthrough i am soon to follow)mentioned that its allready been done any suggstions?
