View Full Version : Tutorial for a scandi sheath
Here is all i need to make the sheath
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_026.jpg
I start of by folding a piece of paper, and mark som points to make the measument of the knife. As shown on the pic.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_027.jpg
Then i cut a strip of the leather that i am going to make the sheath from. I messure at the same spots as i have selected when i marked the paper. I put the strip around the point that i want to messure, messure the lengtht of the stip, and divide it by two, and adds 3 mm. (for shrinking) I put the mark on the paper. and repeat this for all the points on the paper.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_028.jpg
When i have messured all the points i draw a line between them and cut it along the line.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_029.jpg
Put the leather in warm (40 degrees centigrade) water, the leather is put with the smooth side down in the water, when there is no longer comming bubles from the hide, put the leather in a plastic bag for 2 hours.
I then unfold the paper, and put it on top of the whet leather and cut with a 20 degrees angle along the sides of the paper.

Mark a line along the side of the leather, then use a markin wheel to mark where you want to stick the sawing holes.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_032.jpg
Stick the holes, the holes should come out in the midle of the raw hide, or if you are not using raw hide, the holes shoul come out a litle lower than in the midle of the cut.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_033.jpg
. When all th holes are finished, i make the leather a litle thinner against the tip of the sheath. and start stiching with one needle in each end of the thread.

Mask the knife with plastic foile, and put it in the whet sheath
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_035.jpg
I paint the belt strap, in the collour that i want it, in this case black. (spirit based colour)
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_036.jpg
Here i am marking a decor line in the belt strap using a the end of a Tandy plastic "bone folder"
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_037.jpg
Mark the wideness of the belt strap on the back of the sheath.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_038.jpg
Cut 6 holes two and two with apr. 8 mm between downwards

Cut 6 holes two and two with apr. 8 mm between downwards.
Cut between the holes, and put the end of the beltstrap in
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_040.jpg
Like shown here.
also i now start to form the stiches and the sheath to smothing it out.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_041.jpg
Here is the sheath almoust finished, i have to lock the belt strip with a string of leather, but i usually Wait until the leather has dryed.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_042.jpg
I have started to do the decoration, in this case pauting, this means that i am using a stick to moove the overhide of the leather, so that i get a relieff.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_043.jpg
The sheath is now ready to be coloured, i usually wait until the sheath has dried for two days before i do this.
http://www.kniv.net/images/12.12.0_045.jpg
As you can see i have collored the sheath (still using spirit based colour), but i have to go over with black one more time.
Now there is only two things left to do, first impregnate it with leather waseline, and pollish with shoe pollish.

Nuff Said.
Apart from one question trond.
How wide is the point that forms the very tip of the sheath when you cut out the sheath template?
