I ran into the same price shock over here. I finally built my own 60lb hammer and it works besides being simple to build. You guys probably know about this, but I'm new to this forum so please forgive if you do. Some links are on my site or I can post it here if your interested. You should be able to build a get you by 50lb hammer for less than $400 if your scrap sells for the same around here. Not as fancy as a factory model, but parts are easy to obtain and I can work on my ABS MS rating no problem.

Nice looking hammer JAM.

I have looked at quite a few "home brew" hammers on the web but that has got to be one of the most practical designs that I have seen.
Definately going to send off for the plans.

How much noise does the thing make?

I live in an urban area and do have concerns about upsetting the neighbours.
