Hi folks.
Just received my new Klotzli Sailor from Heinnie Haynes, so I thought I'd air my feelings on it.
For the money this seems an absolutely excellent knife.
approx 3" AT34 blade, Ti liners with acid etched scales and pocket clip.
Also comes with a plastic pouch- a bit unneccesary given the clip, but a nice touch. All fasteners are stainless.
The fit and finish are superb. The scales are slightly smaller than the liners, and have a small radius all around their edge, which mates perfectly with the matching radius around the edges of the liners. That's difficult to picture, I know, but it looks good believe me.
The opening and locking action is very smooth indeed. I have some William Henry folders, which in my (albeit limited) experience are fantastic in their mechanism. I would say the Klotzli matches this easily.
The blade shape is rather unusual, but quite usable. I have not owned a knife in ATS34 before, so I look forward to seeing how it holds up.
The overall look of the knife is quite delicate and almost "surgical". Not one for heavy work, but then all I do is sharpen pencils and trim paper with it.
The handle shape is not the most comfortable I've ever come across, but this is a very minor aspect.
Overall I would highly reccommend this knife.

That's not a knife to my personal taste Graham but it looks very attractive. I agree it is rather surgical looking, including the handle.

Good review.

A knife my dad would love. I wouldn't mind having something like that but it's a bit much for me

Graham,

be interesting to see what you think of the ATS34.

I like the blade profile, reminds me of my sypderco teruola, but with a hollow grind and a swedge to thin out the tip a bit.

nice

I have been peering at these knives on the Klotzli website. They look and sound terrific

Luckily I am penniless at the moment, or I would be making ill-considered purchases at the moment - rather than writing this.

But the future ...

Has anyone lived with one of these for a while? How do they shape up?

I seem to be celebrating Klotzli a lot recently but they do make wonderful, wonderful knives. The ATS-34 is superbly heat treated (I'm told) and I find it the equal of the S30V or VG-10 on other knives I own.

My two (as if you didn't know) are the Brian Tighe and the Michael Walker 03-C. The Tighe came seriously razor sharp, the Walker did need a touch up.

These are not cheap knives, and some accuse them of lacking 'character' but I have to disagree. I think their ideosyncratic appearance places them way ahead of many other high priced knives.

They are also pretty much handmade, with the truly stunning hollow grinds being done entirely by hand.

Yup, I agree. I have a different one (well, two) but I would still take the Tighe ahead of everything else.

Still use my Sailor most days, never let me down yet.
Good edge holding, action's still as smooth as when I bought it.

In fact I liked it so much I bought another- with Carbon fibre scales:D

Also have a Walker '06, which I don't really like so much, but will keep.

Might also be tempted by the Walker '03 C like wot Danzo's got- lovely looking thing.

They are vastly underated, and I'm sure no-one would be disappointed- the cost is fairly high, but justifiably IMO.

Hi there guys,
I really like the look of the blade on the Sailor. I wish they were easier to come by on this side of the Atlantic. I know it's not designed as a "heavy-duty" folder, but the tip must be quite stout, yes?
Oh,...it's my first post guys. Actually, it's my second(I did one in the Newbies Forum back in in May). Thanks for having me!

Sorry Noddy mate, i've only just seen your post.

Here are pics of the sailor in my huge mitts. It really is a wonderfully smooth opening knife. It feels like your using a surgeons scalpel.

if you ever think of buying one and are not sure, give me a shout and i will send mine for you to have a play with

Does the knife have dual liners, or is it single linered on just the lock-side?

Does anyone else have one or more to bring along and sit with me and Mik in Klotz Korner?

:D

Got one! Took a while to get here - a long while, but I got one. It's in carbon fibre, Ti and ATS34
I hope to write a review of it later, in company of some other similar sized locking folders.

But for now, suffice it to say - COR!!!!

I know it's new, and your judgement can be swayed by that. But this really is some knd of knife. Light and smooth and fluid and strong like you won't believe. .. Later. :D
