Hi.

I have run a search but findeth not what i seek......

So i thought i'd ask here.

I am almost finished with a couple of fishing knives.

They are constructed of birch and of cork. ( the cork for boyancy and in the middle of the shaft)

So the question is this.. How do i finish them so that they are waterproof. They will be used at sea.

I have had one covered in imersion resin befoe but i can't get that here and sending to the uk to get it done might mean that i can't deliver it when i need too.

I want it to maintain it's boyancy.....can i oil it in the normal way ( but with wieght in to hold it under) or will the oil soak in and take the place of the air.

Or should i use the less favoured method of wet on wet oil coats til it will not take anymore.?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the help. :biggthump

Dave,
Cork is waterproof and unaffected by water in its natural state. (That's why it works so well in bottles:p) the couple of cork & birch knives I have are untreated. The birch is also untreated on my knives but I gues you could carefull oil the birch while leaving the cork dry.
