Hey guys, new here. Not sure if this is the place to put this, but the forum description mentioned something about "breaking news", which I believe this is :D

A new "Soldier" SAK by Victorinox is to be released, seemingly sometime in early 2009.

The only real Vic Soldier is the Alox version. Period. Full stop. End of argument.

I wonder if they had lost the contract, would we have to call them EX-SAK or NOT-SAK in the future?

Not sure if they've even sorted out the left-handed opening. (IMO the OHT is much more ergonomically suited for left handers - no bad thing, but it'd be nice to have a right handed option)

Interesting that the new Parachutist is designed as a left hand opening liner lock.

And before anyone tells me it isn't, I've got one here in front of me.

Isn't that the exact same as the GAK-German Army Knife-by Victorinox apart from slightly differing handles?

It looks ok,but I would preffer the blade serrations the other way round, with the tip of the blade without!!

Can't, I'd get my plaster wet. Anyway there's a big spider in the bath.

The GAK I owned and the OHTrekker are fine to open one-handed, but IMO impossible to close one-handed for right handers.

It'd be awesome if they offered a reverse-option, although I still find the ergonomics of the opening a bit awkward and I think even if they flipped the liner-lock over, it'd still be fiddly to close.

I do like that the same liner locks the bottle opener/screwdriver.

The only trouble I have with Vics one hand openers is that they tend to have a little side to side blade play . This is intentional , they are not peinned as much and the backspring is weakened so it opens easily with one hand . Otherwise with Vics usual backsprings you'd never be able to open the blade .

It's about time, I like it as it is purely functional. The alox SAK will always have a special place in the blade community, but this is the future, and it's good.

The serrations wear down through use. I hate them, but they are hardly noticeable on the Trekker, and don't affect normal performance in any way. In an emergncy - military wise, it is a definate bonus. Well done Vic :biggthump

It is a near copy of the Bundeswehr SAK (OHT). I have one and though I prefer no serrations, these work very well as does the saw. Some sharpen the serration off and I planned to until I went on a camping trip and used the blade for various tasks. I was won over and have kept them.

Well, at least the serrations aren't in the power zone!

...and much "rounder" hole. Cue the "Boycott Victorinox!!!" threads from the Spyderco fanboys.

I like Vnox serrations. They are very easy to sharpen and go filthy sharp.

Bit of an update on this: I sent an e-mail to my favorite SAK seller Swisstool.co.uk (no connection etc. etc.) about the new Soldier 2009, got a reply today saying that they'll get stock in late-July, ready for the official UK release in August. There'll be a limited number available.

hi all,
i just got my new 09 soldier today.
So be aware that you can already order it online and don't have to wait until the end of the summer ( read camping season) to use it.

I have the previous generation Soldier as well, I really like it. It's an everyday carry, opposed to the 09. I'll get into that.

The 09 is really easy to open one handed. The rubber grip is great, non reflective. The tools and fit are strong and solid. I would have liked the awl to be like the prev gen however they put the standard one on there.

The blade is really sharp, as is to be expected, the serated part is less sharp than the inner straight edge.

This knife is a lot bigger, heavier and cumbersome than the prev gen. Which is why i'll only carry it when i'm out with bigger/deeper pockets.

here are a few photos for your consideration.

Well I prefer the blunt tip serrated std version as it suits my job . The "S" model is also good as it has both plain and serrated blades ( But no scissors ) . The new X which has Scissors and a plain edge blade is very good and I know alot of people have been waiting for this model . Its just down to personal opinion . If in doubt buy all three :P Don't know if youve seen this .... http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9743.0.html

call me old fashioned......yes, I am, and grumpy with it sometimes.

but, I cannot get on with serrated blades, unless there are lots of tomatoes that need slicing.;)

Also, I like the Alox scales so much, that I am mourning their loss now.

I am just glad I have a little stash of old Alox SAKs for future trade/gifts/use.

:)

But, I do like the overall size of the new Soldier and I love the Phillips screwdriver that Vic have put on the larger knives. I like my Vic Rucksack and Locksmith very much. and they get some use.

Vic are still going to produce the Alox models ( Farmer , Pioneer etc. ) but not the soldier . Wenger are still going to produce the Si but not date stamp the blade .
As for Serrations , they are a must for cutting rope in a hurry ;) But they not great for most things .

But, isn't the Pioneer exactly the same as the old-style Soldier? Except the date-stamped blade.

By the way, a question for the guys who have both the One Hand Trekker and the new Soldier. I like my Trekker quite a bit. I know that the Trekker has tweezers and toothpick as an extra. And the handle is a different colour. But otherwise, is there a noticeable difference in quality or sturdiness?
I would love to have the new Soldier, because, well, it's the new Soldier isn't it. But I can't really justify to myself to in essence buy the same knife twice!

Yes but with a split ring / keyring attachment and a panel to be engraved on the scale .

I find the serrations fabulous. Just yesterday I bought some buns to toast on the BBQ, they were not precut, I have never used a knife as sharp and as my Soldier to open them up. It was a breeze. The long blade and serrations are ideal for cutting bread.

I wonder if there's as much side to side play on the new soldier, as there is on the trekker?

Wenger Rangers are getting rather huge these days. OHO and plenty of non-serrated options to choose from. Was tempted, but the vertical blade play on all three I tried put me off.
