after getting a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman this week, i have an urge to explore the world of the large folder. just wondered if anyone has a favourite, or one they've seen and want, or even just one that seems so biggy-foldy that it's worth a mention?

the floor is open....

My favourites are the Manix, Harsey T3, and Rukus, all for different reasons.

I love the choil on the Manix, lets you choke up on it for fine work, makes whats a big knife small when you need to pare something close. The scales feel thin and a bit slabby in normal use though.

Rukus is the most comfy, and the lovely axis lock just encourages you to play with it.

The big heavy T3 is bombproof and easy to clean, a good solid tool.

The bandaged cat has a bunch of big folders and can probably offer more comparisons :)

My 2 favorites are the Camillus Cuda Maxx (top) and REKAT Sifu (bottom) Both have 5.5" blades.

(The little 3.5" blade Kershaw Shallot and ruler are both there to show scale.)

Sadly, both knives are discontinued :(

I think there are bigger, it may be the Millie or Police, as they are pretty big. But the manix and mini-manix are discontinued now.

Edit:
Yep i was right, The Police is biggest with over a 4" blade and 4" cutting edge http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=358

The Millie is 4" blade with just under 4" cutting edge
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=326

The manix looks tiny in comparison, at only a 3 1/4" edge and 3 3/4" blade

I'm not a huge fan of big folders, I tend to carry them a lot less than the small or medium ones in my collection.

However my Manix gets some decent pocket time, as does my Military. There are also a couple of Kershaws I use quite often, a Speed Bump and a Junkyard Dog (with G-10 handles and combined blade with D2 edge), my only complaint are the huge pocket clips on them.

Come on guys, the Buck 110 and Large Sebbies are not BIG folders :P I carry a Buck 110 almost every day of my life and don't know it's there until I want it.
My favourite big 'un is my Lone Wolf Harsey 'Ranger' T3. That's a BIG folder ;)
Second on the list for me would be my Buck/Strider 880 SP. Both of these knives see regular service and are both solid, dependable workers that are built like tanks but take and hold a good edge. (although the 880SP needed rather heavy edge modding to make it into a 'cutter' rather than a 'tactical' tool ;) )

I have a cold steel Ultimate Hunter that I like (other than the name...)

Whether it really is the ultimate hunter I doubt (not too easy to clean I suspect) but I use it for bothying in Scotland in the winter and its good to use in gloves (nice big non slip grip) and plenty strong enough.

It's like having 2 blades in one - a 4 1/4" blade ready for use and a 7 1/2" blade if needed. Other than that... it's just rather unique, I guess.

I wonder when Cold Steel is going to get the XL Espada in the market. Now there's a silly big folder, I'd say.

I love my C54 SE Calypso, it is a big mother of a folder but with the micarta scales without liners and the FFG blade it is also very light. Of course due to its rarety it is not a user (only against those pesky pirates and ninjas in my living room) however I would not mind having an extra one to EDC.

The Pohl Force H3 Alpha One outdoor is out of production and replaced by the Alpha Two, same knife with some little differences. Only black blades, glasbreaker and even stronger pivot.

I know, saw it several times. We talked about it on the dutch knifeforum.

I think it's awesome in every way. :pirate:
The knife is capable of taking on many tasks. It's many ways of gripping it gives you the possibility to use it for finer work and also use it for medium chopping. It's strong enough for batoning too, if done in the right way.

Thats a one hell of a beauty you got there, Grats!! If I were you I would keep it in the best shape possible and not EDC it. The old Al Mar's from the 70's and 80's are just so great. Mine is one size smaller than yours and made late 80's. Off Topic my pic with the "De Oppresso Liber" logo.

Edit:
Yep i was right, The Police is biggest with over a 4" blade and 4" cutting edge http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=358

The Millie is 4" blade with just under 4" cutting edge
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=326

The manix looks tiny in comparison, at only a 3 1/4" edge and 3 3/4" blade
http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=165Police,millie, para etc. is not as "big"(heavy)as the Manix as i see it,i compare the Manix with CS Recon 1

Not really a brand. It's a custom knife maker in Thailand that bases his folders partly (at least some of them) on martial arts styles. Others ones like his EQ folders are more EDC type folders. He uses a lot of ATS34 clad ZDP steel in his blades which (I'm told) is awesome stuff. If you want something of his you're going to have to get it on the rare chance that it shows up on the secondary market though. OR place an order and be willing to wait for some months before he gets started on it. He's got a bit of a waiting list by now.

That said. If I were to get a custom tactical type blade made it'd be one of his.

can you recommend a big folder with heft?

i was thinking of the spyderco resilience as i already have a tenacious and the blade and grind are quite good on that.but i would appreciate alternatives to look at.
the cara cara doesn't look as good, what about other manufacturers?

its for for chopping branches/path clearance,i got stuck the other day on a badly overgrown path i just had a delica with me and not the tool for the job.
not being able to bend and tall restricts my ability to travel though the stuff.

i need something larger to make it easier, i decided on a folder as i can put that in my pocket.i have been carrying a fixed blade on my rucksack but its had a few concerned glances.
yes i know i would be better of with a machete :)

That gives you a lot of scope, but for what you are wanting it for, and assuming that super smooth one hand opening and closing isn't essential, then the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman is a bomb-proof workhorse option with a 4.5" blade at less than thirty quid with BB discount from HH:

That gives you a lot of scope, but for what you are wanting it for, and assuming that super smooth one hand opening and closing isn't essential, then the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman is a bomb-proof workhorse option with a 4.5" blade at less than thirty quid with BB discount from HH:

The mechanism is a bit fiddly but it is absolutely rock solid and a real bargain compared to many other big folders.

And as you've now saved £70 you can also buy a smaller knife.....that seventy quid will get you a Michael Morris friction folder made to your own specs.

More insignificant I'd say (typical) ..

A bit off subject; I prefer to see the Makers themselves put their product to the test .
These gents show you exactly what their blades are made for :D

@swanseajack, I have seen and handled far more costly "crap" ;)

+1 for me. Real thick blade too, extra safety lock and option with the sheath to carry as a fixed bladed knife.

I've got alot of love for the Extrema Ratio Rao, but i don't ever see it as a knife i'd own to beat on and rough up!

On that note, i just got my brother a Pocket Bushman for his birthday and i'm VERY impressed with it as a folder, he's been giving it a beasting as i told him i wanted him to use this one and not baby it... from what i've seen it get battened through, it's a very reliable big folder with nothing fancy, just built for purpose!

Hi everyone! This is my first post!
I've been lurking for a while then saw this thread.

My favourite big folder is a CRKT Hawk's DOG (http://i2.guns.ru/forums/icons/forum_pictures/000658/658579.jpg) but I'm damned if I know where it is, other than in the house. It's a great piece of kit. It was my do-everything camping knife up until I mislaid it.

To make up for the loss I bought myself a Buck folding Alpha Hunter; I got the one with rosewood scales and a 12c27m blade. I think it's rather lovely and it's my current camping folder.

Also, not strictly a folder, I own a 30 year old Scalemead balisong that I bought, back when you still could, in the UK; I was 13 at the time! It is truly battered; the handle pins and the catch all need replacing but the blade is stilll good. It's a 4" clip point; If I remember correctly, it's 440 stainless. Obviously, this one doesn't leave the house, which is a shame because I'd love to have it put back into good working order.

[QUOTE=metalbudgie;1394835]Some Old School 80's Al Mar SERE action. Bought one from Framar back then, sold pre interweb and found another last year. One of the few knives I thought of buying again and one I wouldn't sell.

Hi

I have one of these de Oppresso Liber knives, it belonged to my brother in-law's father who passed away. How do I tell if it is the genuine article or a reproduction?

I can't see a practical use fo them and carrying them in town would be a bit "iffy", but I would like one of those new XL clip point Voyages from Cold Steel. I'd also like to try a Benchmade LFK and the Camillus Cuda Maxx 7.0 is one I'd like to have... 15 inches overall!

But I'd rather spend my money on knives I'd actually carry, which means about 4 or so inches.

About as big as it gets for me. Anything over and I would most likely look towards getting a fixed blade instead.

Hi there.
Without breaking the bank, and I have a very small and fragile bank, I recently bought a CRKT Hammond Cruiser for £23 in the HH clearance section. That fills the hand nicely and after removing the thumb studs because I found that they were badly situated for me and I was only using the flipper, removing the pocket clip because I don't like to advertise the fact that I'm carrying a knife and a thorough looking at by two of Mr Lansky's sharpening systems it seems more mine if you know what I mean.
For a cheap fixed blade the Hultafors Heavy Duty Knife at £8 is a damned good work knife or a Cold Steel Tanto Lite or Outdoorsman Lite for£28, More show and go. I've got the Tanto Lite and it feels good in the hand, nicely balanced. But that's for another thread perhaps, Mods edit as needed.

Phew, difficult first post over. :)

It's like having 2 blades in one - a 4 1/4" blade ready for use and a 7 1/2" blade if needed. Other than that... it's just rather unique, I guess.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b114/Clydetz/DSCN7657.jpg

We call it a Dague a la D'estaing. It was invented by Amiral D'estaing. It is an hunter tool with enough reach to finish off a wounded boar.
This is not a folding Bowie.
It's made for thrusting more than chopping.
It is very uncommon in France. :)
