Hi all,
The thought just struck me...
Would it be all that bad if we were required to have a license to carry knives?
I mean, it would make things much simpler if all we had to do to justify having a knife was to flash a license. Although, depending on what the limitations of the license were of course, provided they're not ridiculous
Say, we apply for a knife carrying license...get it...and then no longer have any restrictions about knife carrying, unless it was an obvious situation (do you really need your woodlore in Tesco?).
Thoughts?
Cheers. Jake
This (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1452&highlight=knife+license) thread may help, as may this (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2773) one.
I think the general response was that the idea had limitations

Oops, classic case of not looking around properly...
However, i think, under the right conditions, it's quite a good one. Also provides me with an ID :yikes: ;)

Learn to drive a car and you will have your ID :)
A knife licence by its very existance says that a knife is something that needs to be controlled and have limited access. The first crime committed by someone with a knife licence (even if the crime was not with a knife) you would find the issuing of licences would be tightened up till it was almost impossable to get one.
And Mr Scrote the mugger will somehow manage to get an unlicensed knife anyway. It will only clamp down on the people with legitimate uses.
Also any knife crime in an area and all the licensees will immediately be under suspicion.

A licence can also be revoked or refused. And as Chux just said, "they" will know where all the licence holders are.

John, i've got a provisional but some places don't except them
True, i suppose i hadn't thought it through properly! Any licensed murderers would immediatly cause a complete restriction...
One of the proposals by the new Scottish parliament is apparently to intruduce a knife licence. My head whipped around when I heard this on the telly yesterday......didnt hear any more though.
how would people feel about the police having more power to search people?
I notice whatever thread I'm on I look who's viewing and Ross is there. I've been cought
you're under surveillence andy......

Ross, what would your attitude be? From a completely un-biased perspective, do you think it would de-crease crime at all??
a licence? To be honest, those that have a good reason to carry a knife do so without fear anyway. I dont think it would reduce crime, no.

Thats interesting, what about your collegues? What do they think. If most of the police officers diagree surely their point should be heard!
i think its a great idea. itll let legitimate people have and carry without any fuss.
it wont have any affect on criminals carrying though
Unfortunately, the police dont really have a say when it comes to things like this. We simply have to enforce the laws that are created by the politicians.

Are your voices heard at all?
Not us on the streets. Once you rise to the upper echelons of the rank structure then you may be heard.

Inspector? Or even Sargeant? (how is that spelt BTW?)
It seems to me the police get more crap from politicians having to enforce these vote winning laws then we do from having to live by them. In Some cases they get both sides of the problem.
I usually abbreviate it to Sgt.....It's sergeant.
I would think even higher than that. Superintendent & above is when it gets really political.

More than one thing I am afraid, Jake.
