I will start this one off with a quick review or more like my initial thoughts as I did not use it very much.

It was seriously sharp out of the box with the hairs jumping out of the way on my arm.

The only cutting I did with it was on free hanging paper and double and single layer corrugated cardboard.

It was quite superb and was able to slice thin strips off the cardboard.

The fit & finish were the normal superb quaility from CRK with the geffler sheath also upto spec (although a right handed one only :crying: )

I dont much like the upswept blade profile as I dont do any skinning but it a very nice knife just to sit and look at.

Well I've been playing with Cybil the Sable all week, and packed it off to Roger this morning with a toy in the handle. Royal Mail tracking code is SU 8004 2930 4GB.

Its a good solid knife, and so sound it seems to ring like a bell when you handle it, seems bombproof. Sort of a "half way" size knife, too big and heavy to hang around your neck, and could do with an inch or two as a belt knife. Far too small for Colin.
Nice leather sheath (thank heaven it's not plastic) but without any retention, but its deep enough in a Nordic style so the knife should be safe inside.

I haven't been using it much in anger, I'll leave that to you other maniacs. It's mainly been used around the kitchen and to wave menacingly at bad guys on the TV, well it certainly had Big Arnie worried last night on Terminator2. Cybil the Terminator slayer! And it passed the all important critical Stilton test with ease.

/EDIT post moved here from the sable sticky by Martyn.

Well I finally managed to get some time in the woods with Cybil the Sable, I must agree with every one that the fit and finish of this knife is superb. The sheath works very well too, when I placed it just forward of my right hip it dipped nicley into my right pocket and was out of sight even under a tee shirt (don't want to go upsetting the sheeple :D ).

So off into the untamed wilderness that is Cannock Chase (avoiding the massed mountain bikers), lots and lots of Pine and Silver Birch where I was, the knife created wonderful fuzz sticks and carved notches and grooves for a figure four trigger no problem. It didn't chop too badly for a light blade going through 1/2" to 3/4" deadwood branches with not too much problem, it would handle thicker with a baton but I didn't want to do that to a pass around blade. Then I started to think about what I could drop inthe handle, out with my scout firesteel and after a few mins I'd pared enough of the hard red plastic off the handle to make it fit (some one with a buffer should be able to tidy it up :D ).

Back at the ranch it was time for a quick bath in WD40 to remove the pine resin, and a quick wipe down with a Tuf Cloth..now to clean the knife :yikes: . Even after a good hour of using the knife my hands were fine (I had worried that the knurling would be a bit rough). All in all I was very pleased, and would be very happy to add this to my collection.

I'll get it into the post to SOA Thursday RMSD.

Looking forward to the next pass around :biggthump

Cheers

Shaun

Cybil arrived safely in Cromarty this morning.

SWMBO: "Package for you. What have you been buying?"
Me: "It's Cybil"
SWMBO: <taps foot> "What have you bought a knife like that for?"
Me: "Well, not bought exactly... it's a pass-round, raffle sort of thing"
SWMBO:  <sigh>

First impressions? Really solid, much more impressive than I thought a hollow handled knife would be. Comfortable in the hand. Even less likely to carry it than the MAXX. Nice sheath.

I'll play over the next couple of days then send it on. I'm on a residential course next week, and my colleagues might look a bit askance at me cutting the steak with it...

I was in a Weatherspoons the other day with some friends, ordered the steak and they did not have any steak knives left. I used my S30V Military and a couple of seconds later realised everyone at the table was looking at this knife in shock and awe. Oooopppps... :slap:

Cybil the Sable crawled out from under my desk, where she'd spent the last week. She looked exhausted. "Please, let me go, you big hunk, I can't take any more"

OK, more prosaically, I got back home this weekend from a horrible week. I saw this thread pop up and thought" :censored: it. I should have sent Cybill onto Shing"

Deposited at the PO this afternoon. Should be leaving at 4pm.

Sorry :twak:

Cybil is a lithe little knife, light in the hand, thin in the bevel, a real slicer. She takes a razor edge easily.

Not sure if I can get used to a round handle but shes perfectly formed and looks good in black. Love the leather sheath.

On her way to Tanto now with a little extra.

i liked this knife, felt good in the hand and the sheath was of top quality.i would put a swedish fire steel in the handle and strike it in the small niche(?)were the hand meets the blade(see pics in gallery).all in all i would be happy to own and carry one.
cheers.

Hi All

Quaterstaff, I found that the best place to strike the Ferro rod was on the milled thumb groove on the back of the blade.

I cant get a firesteel to spark on the milled grooves on my Mountaineer? :crying:

Harv

Angle the blade down, and at an angle, then draw the rod backwards up and away from your tinder. the angle of the blade increases the length of serrations that you're drawing the rod along. Let me know if it works. :D

Picked Sybil up this morning (plus extras) & will be putting her through her paces this evening, & all this week

The Mighty Sybil has just defeated a multitude of foes, including (but not restricted to)

An errant pine board 1" thick (hole gouged & large "v" notched)

A variety of fruit (the banana lop was a particular favourite)

A marauding sunflower (was @ 8' high, but me 'n' Sybil soon cut it down to size, about twenty of them each no more than 5" in length :p & the head is in about a million pieces)

Oh, & she helped cut up my sausage in batter for me tea ;)

All in all she performed well (blade length permitting:rolleyes: ) & will be accompanying me on another defence of "Casa McIver" tomorrow evening when I expect to be seeing off a particularly tenacious eucalyptus tree & a variety of pizza slices :D

bagman

Colin - make sure you give it a clean between the eucalyptus tree & the pizza :yikes:

Sybil's a good 'un. Perhaps the forum should adopt her in place of Scully, Sybil's quieter ;)

I didn't get round to dispatching the wild eucalyptus plant, but Sybil certainly made short work of a funghi pizza & a choc chip muffin for dessert;)

Sybil & me...

...Just spent a wonderful night together, I arranged the beer & wine, she cut the plasticy bit off the wine bottle :)

I fired up the chimnea, she provided the "little slicy bits of wood" & cardboard in manageable chunks.

Then a lovely evening was topped off with me, Sybil & Sally (the sebenza) cuddling up in front of I-spy (great film BTW) & then off to bed ;)

I shall be sad to see her go, but go she must :(

Can't 'member who she's off to next (someone'll tell me, I'm sure) so it'll be Monday or Tuesday.

She's a great knife, only spoiled by being mauled by sooo many other men, slut :twak:

Thanks for the greetings guys. Just got back from Bisley at 2 o'clock this morning. Was a bit puzzled when the doorbell rang and the postie had a package for me. Finally clicked that it was Sybil - she's a beaut. Got the day off today so I think we'll get aquainted...............

Can you hang onto her until we get the raffle sorted out please as you are last on the list unless Kevin (Coutel) wins it.

So, if we're suggesting dates, how about the bonus number from the Lotto Saturday Draw on 29 November.

Long enough for anticipation... soon enought that we can get it to Kevin if he wins...

We'ren't we sending it for a bushcraft review? What happened about that?
