after falling for the UKPK I've been thinking of getting a large locking spyderco which do you recommend? and why?

The Manix ( and NOT it's little brother ) just because or the Lil'Temp if you can find one, both discontinued in the first edition but there is a new green Manix. In my opinion they both have great ergos hey they are Spydie's after all.
Or you could try the Native series or the good old reliables the Endura or Delica, they've been around for a while but they are great designs

Manix or Military.

I'd go for a Military or ParaMilitary, mainly because they are a lot lighter than the Manix and I prefer the liner lock and compression lock to the back lock on a Manix.

what sort of money are we talking for a military or manix?

I'd have a Manix over a Millie any day. Fluffy will be along in a minute no doubt, and he'll say the same too betcha ;)

Manix, without a doubt.

The Native III is surprisingly large in a fairly small package, if that makes sense, and an excellent affordable choice if the Manix is a bit too large and spendy.

Have to agree. The Manix is a solid handful. Check the reviews especially what happened when it was put up against a large sebbie and a strider.

The Military is a bit more wand thin and while nice... the Manix has that thick slab of S30V of a blade.
Everyday user you can keep so sharp with a few strokes on the sharpmaker.

Most Spydercos are optimised for one job or another. What's the intended purpose, carry, and typical thing you'd cut?

for value for money, i think the Tenacious is hard to beat as a bigger version of the ukpk. having said that, i am waiting for a lil temp to arrive on my doormat...

Tenacious

it's cheap but gets the job done, needs sharpening more often but I don't mind that so much

Just got the new endura 4 with a stainless steel handle and it has got to be one of my favorite knives.

Another vote for the Manix.

I have 4 Militaries, or is it three... I might have sold one... can't remember. Anyway, much as I love the Military and I know that lock is pretty much the best Liner lock on a production knife around... Well, that a lot of long blade thats also razor sharp and its supported by a liner lock.

That makes me slightly uncomfortable in a way I never realised till I got the Manix. That lock is immense! Heck the whole feel of the Military changed for me when I got the Manix. Now the Military feels more like a rapier to the Manix Claymore like heft. If that makes any sense at all?:D

I have had a few bigguns - but never got on with them in the end - got a big Boker and a few Pumas and Bucks to do all that

I do like the CF Caly 3 for outdoorsiness though - its lockback UKPK - very elegant way of doing hard work

If we are talking about value for money it's hard to beat the delica 4.

Love my Manix but if someone were looking for something similar to the UKPK with a lock I'd suggest the Sage or Caly III. If the budget were tighter I'd go for a Tenacious.

+1.

Preferably in shocking pink or, for those low-key moments, British Racing
Green. :D

Not a big knife, really, but a very useable tool. Bring on the pallet bands, the
shrink-wrap, and the carton tape. My Delicas eat that stuff all day.

There are lots of excellent Spydies, I'm sure you'll find any of the knives suggested earlier quite handy. My absolute favourite is the Persian (75mm one), it's a bit different from the regular Spydercos, I love it. It looks rather nice and is very useful.

Consider also the weight. Caly 3 for example is a brick. I suspect the same for some others like the manix.

The Manix weighs the same as a small semi detached house.

That's why, for me, the Millie is a much better knife.

Nick

Have you ever tried to get a small semi detached house into your pocket?
Even in your " Barbie" period? :D

The CF millie is nice and light, it's true, with lots of winning features especially if it no longer has the "MILITARY" slogan on the blade.

The Manix is not but the pocket clip can be removed unless you want a constant from pocket deployment. If it has to stay in your pocket without a clip it would be a noticeable lump but on the pocket rim with the clip it's not a problem, any more than a large sebby.
I confess I take the clips off and use belt pouches or throw them into packs for travelling. A ukpk on the pocket clip is fine for most things.

In the garden use a fixed!

Since I bought a Tenacious I've stopped looking at other, bigger Spydies, it might not be the biggest folder around, but it's so usable. Mind you, if a Lil Temp came up at the right price.........

I agree, I found that a small fixed blade was much more versatile, and lighter than a Manix. For me the Manix is over-engineered, why do you need all of that strength in a locking folder? At the end of the day its still a folder and isn't going to enjoy being batonned into wood, eventually this is bound to created some blade play even if the lock doesn't fail.

The Tenacious is a cracking knife too. I used mine today to cut up some old rope that was holding a swing together. I like the fact that it won't be too expensive to replace if I damage it or lose it. Its a real work horse.

Tenacious, the manix is comedy big, it serves no real purpose apart from being a Really big folder.

Correctamundo! Couldn't agree more!

Big folders - for me in any case - need to feel light and a bit breakable - even if they aren't - because I might feel tempted to lean into it a bit - and then feel all nervous afterwards

Its because I'm a bit of a ninny really, but I don't like asking any folder to push to hard - they might just turn and nip you in the leg :D

+1 for me:D 4 Millies and no Manix (and I've tried the Manix)

Since I cut with the blade and not the spine I don't worry much about the supposedly weak lock on the Millie:P

Sverre

PS! The liner lock on my Millies is rock solid so I'd probably get away with cutting with the spine;)

PPS! If you can get a Lil'Temp it is lighter, stronger and (imho) better than the Manix. A lot cuter as well:D

I have a CarbonFibre Caly3 which is a fantastic EDC and the CF makes not to heavy.
I have a Chinook3 which is the same size as the big manix. It is a great fighting folder which is what it and the Manix are designed for. It fits great in a parka pocket and is heavy enough for lots of hard use besides MBC.

One of my absolute favorite Spydercos is the 52100 Mule. The new M4 Mule is coming out on wed the 22nd for those who want one.

I cant imagine anything less suitable for you to do with a knife that you've payed a lot of money for than fight with it:D just think how you'd feel if it got damaged:lol: the last fight i got in left me feeling knacked, i must have run for over an hour:lol:

Unsub, the hints people are dropping are that we don't discuss knife combat here. Please don't go any further down that path.
