View Full Version : Going off production knives :yikes:

Especially for fixed blades, the propostion of the custom knives and production knives that I have is shifting quickly. I still have a bug for Fallkniven and Roselli piece, but the tendency is clear.

Oddly, the same is happening for me with production folders - I say oddly because the reason I started having too many knives was precisely because I like the egalitarian, 'everyone can own one', common factor of production folders.

And its not as if I have very many custom folders - and that's only if Ray Cover's count, or Karel's mods :D

This is a passing phase, right?

I try to keep an equal set of knives, I prefer my customs but if im going somewhere where I know the knife will likely get damaged or dropped/lost then I tend to take a lower cost production knife that is readily available usualy via Heinnies :)

Custom folders? Not the path for me :D Fear custom folders I do. Economies destroyed by custom folders they are.

I was thinking on a related subject the other day and wondered whether declining interest is simply because there's nothing much exciting happening in the world of production folders at the moment?

To clarify that, with the notable exception of the Urban, Spyderco seem to mostly be caught up with releasing coloured sprint runs, Benchmade aren't really doing anything interesting at all, Fallkniven bless us with a single new model about every other year and as for the glacial pace of change at Victorinox... Oh and I nearly forgot CRK releasing their radically revised Sebenza 21 ;)

Not that they're my cup of tea, but kudos to Kershaw for seemingly being the only big manufacturer I've come across that are releasing lots of innovative models. Unfortunately they mostly seem to be assisted openers.

However if someone's got some exciting folder news I've missed, then I'd love to be put right!

You need to pass amongst the poor of the parish, dispensing production folders as you go. The parishioners will bless you.
