I.ve just returned from spending the day at my parent's in Essex.
My mother , who worries about my hobby, was saying that she has read in ? the Evening Standard about metal detectors being used at some London mainline stations.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Aidan
I don't, but as with the 'More from Blunkett' thread we have to take everything said by politicians at the moment with a pinch of salt. There is likely to be an election in four months time so we are now into the period of posturing and pretence as statements are released on a daily basis just to see what attracts attention.
As the powers that be can't get trains into the railway stations I very much doubt if they can manage metal detectors!

wow thats gonna go down well with the electorate, knowing how popular train delays always are
i mean the difference between a belt buckle, a small swiss army knife, or a stainless steel pen
will a small army of people will be required to strip search those with body piercings ?

At a recent football match up here, a couple of metal detectors were used to scan all the people entering the turnstiles (actually, it was after the turnstiles so they couldnt go anywhere else). Didnt turn up anything interesting though. Most football violence happens outside the grounds now.

BBC News has the following article here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4078019.stm) about a trial involving a metal detector at Hammersmith Bust Station.

I must admit these detectors would make me feel very uncomfortable even if I was carrying a perfectly legal knife and wearing a suit!
I think I will be looking for a nice little suede/leather wallet to carry my knife in, similar to the one I have for my Spyderco Kiwi. At least that way - if I get stopped - it should be clear that I am carrying it as a collector and someone who cares for my knife rather than someone who is looking to quickly pull out a weapon.

Oh god, here we go again. :sigh:
It's a non starter, It would take ages to go through all the objects and bags etc by hand and they aren't going to fork out for Xray machines on every station. If it happens at all it will be the yobs and assumed unsavoury types or those causing trouble that will get the once over as ususal. If they are looking for guns they are more likely to find them in the pocket of someone driving about in a stolen car than on the West Coast Line!
I will take the Docs comments as final
Thread locked, for your own sake.......
