Here are some photos from today's visit. Thanks Russel for setting it up. Hope you can correct any mistakes in the photo captions.

First Taylor's Eye Witness Works

A big machine that I think stamps out blade blanks

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6833.jpg

Most of the production is kitchen knives for the likes of Waitrose and John Lewis. This is some of the steel I forget the grade but stainless and notice the tapered profile to reduce grinding. French steel, apparently Sheffield does not make the tapered profile.

One of the many die things for fitting to the big machines for stamping out blade blanks.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6835.jpg

A pile of blanks, the folk were not working for H&S reasons when we went through but on our way out I noticed a chap banging blades out about one every 2 seconds.

A big heat treat oven of some kind

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6839.jpg

Lots of CNC grinding machines

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6844.jpg

pop a blade blank on here, it slides in and out again and is ground.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6846.jpg

In this shot you can just see the stone, the grinding is done on the side of the stone. These machines are very efficient, the chap doing scissor blades told me he does 82 dozen pairs of blades a day.

A few ground blades

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6849.jpg

upstairs to Russel's folding knife workshop

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6861.jpg

Russ showing one of his folders

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6859.jpg

I forget this chaps name but he has been in the industry a while was a fount of knowledge and I think trained Russel to do folders?

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6878.jpghaps

Not a brilliant picture of it, low light.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6864.jpg

These are the kinds of posh folders they are wanting to make more of.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6874.jpg

And these are scales for the cheapie working knives

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6866.jpg

Then it was next door to Brian the grinder, another lovely chap, for old bike nuts his last was a vincent black shadow though he is more into boats nowadays. Not sure who the blond roll up smoker is I don't remember her being with us any ideas?

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6892.jpg

One of Brians 3 big wheels

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6894.jpg

Today he had been working on the belt grinder

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb176/thewoods_album/IMG_6896.jpg

and just as we were leaving he got back to work

Very probably! Apparently, in my absence, he was also on top form with stories of my technical stupidity and subsequent language!

Sorry I couldn't be there, but someone had to be home when the kids finished school and it seemed a little unfair to make Robin rush off when I've spent plenty time with all the folk anyway!

For those of you who haven't yet seen them, here's some video taken with both Russell and Brian ...

I was trying to eat a Ryvita and have nearly choked Dave, it was the "go with the flow" that did it. Anyway stopped choking and grinning mate.
