Here's the jig I used to regrind the tip of a knife blade:

I recommend against attempting this without a jig of some sort, because you'll just stuff it up.
I put two pins into the corners of a block of Simon's excellent beech plywood (no worries, it doesn't destroy the block and it'll be used for a handle one day). The block is better than a typical Vise Grip, because it's position is more flexible. The vertical clearance is important too, because it allows you to lower the handle, raising the tip to keep the bevel on the belt at the right angle.
To set up, place the back of the blade against a pin and push the blade bevel flush with the belt. This sets the angle. Now, G-clamp the block in place.
When grinding a straight section, you go across both pins, and only use one pin for each side of the tip. I like to mount the sander low and look forn from above where I can see where the action is - the metal leaving the bevel as the belt does the work.
SAFETY FIRST: Make sure you clean out your sander before you start grinding. Wood powder air suspensions ignite and burn readily and piles of dust can smoulder for hours before flaming. And when you see the sparks flying off the face of that carbon steel, you'll understand why you don't mix wood dust and steel sparks.

It's funny, but I was just searching for a blade jig and I completely forgot about this one or how effective it was.

Here's some other things I have come across:

Thank You!
I have been looking for something like this and this may be it.
I made my first knifebevel with just a file, worked well but was a lot of work.
Second knife I used a beltsander wich was a lot faster but I could only get a big angle on the bevel. I'm going to be trying these.
Although the 1st jig seems very simple I do believe that it worked very well. It still allows for a free movement but keeps it under control.

like the first jig, going to have a go of that
cheers
Iv started using a door hinge super glued at the angle you want, then clamp the knife to the hinge. not perfect but better than using files like i used to.

Barney,
I would hate to bother you, but if you are making two jigs , would you consider making three. I would also like to have a budget idea.
Thank you in advance

Oh My God,
I did want to use my spare time trying to make knives not grinding jigs:O
but not everyone has facilities so here goes.
I will call it a tenner for materials, a tenner for doing it and post as is charged to me as I suspect they will be heavyish.
Please pm if interested, £10 material deposit, maximum of six to be made.
lead time anticipated around 2 weeks.
That will cover the cost of my new toys.

I've had a go at one of these today making it from bits in the shed and now I have to make a longer platen for the grinder to try it out.

If it would help anyone, I have just noticed that the current 'Tilgear' catalogue has an excellent sliding grinding jig constructed from alluminium extrusions with brass thumb screws and black plastic locking knobs. It is completely adjustable and unlike those jigs shown here so far is readilly adjustable against the grinding wheel itself. The price is £19.75 with VAT extra. Tilgear are an old established and excellent company with a very comprehensive tool catalogue,..they now have an embryo web site where you can aquire their interactive CD for online ordering.

Have you been in there recently? Where you used to be able to wander round the lot, it's now pretty much counter service with a very small area to wander. Last time I went in I was there for ages as the bloke in front of me kept asking for item after item but wasn't sure exactly what he wanted. It reminded me of the Two Ronnies...

Hello All
The first four are ready.
Pics are here fully closed,
http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo6/therealbarney/045-1.jpg
Fully open, I estimate at 50 degrees, more than enough.
http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo6/therealbarney/046-1.jpg
I have made as accurate a representation as possible from the photo's earlier in the thread. I have welded the assembly rather than screws, this doesn't appear to affect the functionality. I have increased the size of the platten, this should grip a tang of 30mm in its entirety.
As previously stated the first four are ready, I will package and finalize postage costs on Monday. All being well they will be posted on Tuesday. Is everyone happy with my representation?

Yep,
looks cool.
I had a go with the one I lashed up the other day, it's not as elaborate as those but it does the job. I made a platen from a piece of aluminium for my Aldi grinder just to try it out and I think with a bit of stiffening under it will be well up to the job.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/peteff/grinderjig1.jpg
Looks a very workable set up
I knocked up a bigger table as well. I made a bit of a frame to support it, very simple but I'm pleased with how it works

are these all taken?
I'll knock you one up in the week if you're interested, I'm sure there are enough bits left in the shed. It might be slightly different to my "prototype" but it will do the same job. :D

Jerbal the only difference as I see it is that the top hinge means that you dont have to elongate the hole for the bar. :) I almost missed it off and elongated the hole but was worried about the blade grabbing and the bar moving about wrecking the blade. Probably a needless concern.
I would love one if anyone wants to make one?<><

Hello All

Anyone made anything yet with their grinding jig? Not a magic wand is it:D
I got the platten extended and now the bolt that hols the original bed level keeps slipping due to the extra weight.
Anyway here is my first attempt with mine a flat grind about 3/4 the way up the blade and then a slight secondary which I have Convexed.
http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo6/therealbarney/bushcrafter002.jpg
To continue this I have made a simpler version of the jig which only uses 3 holes tapped 6mm and a piece of plate spaced to blade thickness with some washers. The plate has slots to drop over the screws for ease of altering. The back screw sets the angle and locks with a nut. I made a little blade with it on the Aldi grinder and knocked a handle up but it's not assembled or sanded yet.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/peteff/fiftyp.jpg
That is stupidly simple - well done! :D
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/peteff/jig.jpg
Thats exactly the kinda thing i made. But i just G clamp the blade onto the angle bar:D
Heres my take on it

sorry for my ignorance here... just trying to work out what your doing
so you're clamping the blade to the jig, setting the angle you want to grind the knife face to on the jig, then passing the blade across the face of the belt by sliding the jig on the platen?

Squint n it makes sense:lol:
I just clamp the blade to a bit of 2" angle with mole grips but i can tilt the belt head to the right angle ;)
