These two are my latest work. One is a Nesmuk, the other one a Sgian Dubh.

The Nessmuk is 188 mm long, made of 01 tool steel. The handle scales are Rippled Sycamore treated with boiled linseed oil, and I used brass pins and lanyard tube. I used some black fibre liners for contrast to the light coloured Sycamore. The handle shape is a subtle bushy type.

The SgianDubh is a bit of a departure from the knives I make normally. I have seen a lots of these knives on the net, but also, a lot of them seem to be poor quality and/or tacky looking.

My interpretation is 177 mm long, the blade is 24 mm wide and 3 mm thick. I used a scandi grind because I think it will make it a more useful knife. The handle scale are stabilised Burr Elm, epoxied to the full tang and held & decorated with two copper/steel mosaic pins. The blade has filework all around the handle.

I have tried to create a simple and crisp design, hopefully, I have done justice to the Sgian Dubh design.

Both knives are lovely work, excellent in fact. I particularly like the nessmuk - It has great flowing lines, I'm sure it would make an excellent knife for dressing out and skinning.

Lovely Nessie, beautyful shape. That's exactly what I would like on my
hunting trips next autumn.

However, on light wood you can allways gain more structure by using
Danish Oil.

But that's only my opinion, I like darker wood.

Wow! Thanks for all the nice positive feedback!

Glad that the Scots among you like this little knife. I gather these knives are more of a ceremonial items these days, so I tried to give it a bit of elegance without being tacky, hence the filework, the copper mosaic pins and the Burr Elm.

At the same time, I think the scandi grind will make it a useful knife as well.

Although the style is far removed from Nessmuk's original (but I am working on one) I really like making these style of knives, I just like the flowing lines and the curves!

I did think of staining the Sycamore, but I prefer to keep the woods close to their natural colours, I think it's difficult to beat nature's creations.

For the etching, I have one of those etching machine, etch-o-matic, I think, you make stencils of what you want to etch, and its then fairly easy to do the etching itself. I think it's a bit temperamental though, I found it difficult to get really fine details with the stencils.

I have had a couple of knives laser etched but it cost a fortune, so I'll stick with the etching at the moment.

The filework is not so much difficult but rather fiddly and you have to look out on the sides of the blade too, otherwise you may have a really good patter on the back of the blade, but a scraggly one on the sides of the blade.

At to the sheaths, I got the day off today, so i have my thinking cap on!
