View Full Version : The Merry Meet of May
Hi folks
This is your captain speaking.
:sick09:
After taking advice from the Grand Old Fella, the Duchess in Boots, the Muscly Armourer and the Grumpy One With A Heart of Gold, we all feel that despite Knives UK being in the middle of the merry month of May we should still have a meet up at the beginning of the month.
So, we shall convene the EMCCU at the Lincolnshire Poacher, once again, on Saturday, 2nd May. I've booked the pub, and Karen is very happy to see us again. Find the pub here:

anyway on with the nice things. I'm hardly going to let it bother me
There's a chance I'll have the new bag with lots of bits and pieces if people are interested.
I've also thought about bringing the shapton sharpening stone as it's fairly clean compared to waterstones. At home I rest it on a chunk of granit (which I wont bring) so if anyone has a stone holder that would be welcome.

So will people be bringing their knives along with them? Reason I ask is because I've never really carried or taken outside my home any of my blades other than a ukpk or a few saks. Always thought "I'm a collector" might not work to well as a reason for carry.
BTW I hope to attend this also :)

Oh yes!
Some folks bring along several dozen knives of all descriptions, others bring just a few and some don't bring any.
If you are worried about travelling with your knives I can send you an official invitation that you can show to a police officer.
However in five years of us doing this nobody has ever had a single problem taking their knives to and from meetups, and many of us travel by public transport. I do myself, and I've carried dozens!
;)
I hope you can make it, as it would be good to see you.

Thanks Stephen63 I get the pic :D
Thanks Stephen63 I get the pic :D
After many meetups now we've come to realise that having many knives on display is much better than having just a few.
Four or five people looking at a couple of knives can be worrying for pub staff, even in a private room. It looks a bit odd, and I can accept that.
Twenty people in the same room with several hundred knives on display turns it into something quite different! We all then become rather eccentric but harmless, simply by virtue of the sheer number of knives on display.
In the immortal words of Karen, the manager of our spiritual home, the Lincolnshire Poacher in Nottingham:
'Dan, your lot are certainly eccentric, but less so than the model train enthusiasts who also book the room. And your lot are far more polite.'
:D
Danzo
I also think having so many would have a similar effect on how the police would react. A few knives in pockets bags etc may not be a collected. A pack full of the things is too many to think of it as tools for criminal activities.

If I am able to attend this I will be coming as a wounded man as my SnG and my Crawford will most likely still be stuck in America :( :( :C
Still having sleepless nights without them :C
But hopefully seeing others knives/collections will help take my mind off them :)
Can't wait to bring my small and modest collection
I do hope you can make it.
I tend to travel to meetups with my knives wrapped in a cloth knife roll and placed inside a large hard case laptop bag, with a padlock.
In the very unlikely event that I should be stopped and searched this means that I have reasonable proof that I'm doing what I claim to be doing, and not carrying knives for the sake of it.
Danzo
We'll be trying to get an active 'trading table' going at this meetup folks, so bring along all your underused and unwanted knives, and even the gear that you can't fit in your loft or, dare I say it Dave, your garage, and want to sell.
:D
Let's not forget the spirit exemplified by Grace:
'Many men's run down toilet is another woman's workshop.'
That's almost Buddhist, that is.
There have been problems with table space for such a trading table at previous meetups in the Poacher, but I'm hoping to agree with Paul Hardwick that as fast as he fills up all available tables in the pub with his vast collection, he will build new ones for us out of kydex.

Well I have just arrived home from the meetup and I must say what a pleasant day it has been. This must have been one of our best meet ups yet.......
It was good to see everyone and what a super display of knives there was as well..........................
Many thanks to everyone who came along today for making it a great day.
There were less knives on display than we sometimes get, but that made many of those on display all the more interesting. New knives from Guy and Shing attracted attention, as did the always fascinating display of antique knives from Zorro and Chris.
We were all pleased to see that Shing has given up the Guinness, but a bit concerned that he's replaced it with Crystal Meth. His fascination with the Ladyboys of Bangkok is undiminished, but I guess everyone needs a hobby.
It was good to see Tom_W and greendestiny for the first time: I hope you both enjoyed yourselves.
Big thanks to Paul Hardwick, Geoff Wood, David Konopinski and Grace Horne for donating raffle prizes. I actually won something I hadn't donated myself, a very nice belt sheath for a folder, made by Geoff.
In the grand tradition of the EMCCU a prize was won by a first time attendee: greendestiny left with the modded Pitbull and handmade sheath by Neill116. As always thanks to Andy for collecting all the raffle money, and trying his best to call the numbers with a sore throat.
A personal thank you to Zorro (Dave) for the handcrafted Knobbler, and to One_Rod (Mick) for the handcrafted titanium Spork.
A good afternoon had by all.

It is indeed!
It's a dessert Spork, I think, being about the size of a very substantial teaspoon.
Tabitha will do a major happy dance when she sees it.
:D
Danzo
and didn't I hear that it's made from titanium as well?
Thanks to all for making it another great meet-up, a big welcome to the two new guys who seemed to enjoy themselves despite Shing's dancing!

It was wonderful to meet you gentlemen. I had a great time and hope to come again to the next one. Thankyou.
Hopefully by next time I'll have my other two knives back from the US and so I'll bring my collection too instead of just my ukpk clipped to my pocket.
Have to also mention that I saw Guy' work for the first time and was very very impressed by both his foders and fixed knives!
nice to meet you too mate, look forward to seeing you at many more meet ups
