Hi everyone. Some of you will know me as 'trailangel' especialy from the CKD. I decided to change my user name to 'coutel' as this is the name I have decided to use on my knives.
See you all later.
Regards.
Kevin.

Where does "coutel" come from?

Martyn. Good to hear from you.
The name 'Coutel' is meant to be a medieval English name for knives which I think originated from France. 'Coutel' subsequently changed to the french word' coutellerie' and the english word 'cutlery'. Coutel therefore is the medieval name for 'cutlery' (or so I am lead to believe:) .

Martyn..is there any chance of starting a list of current UK knife makers and companies (maybe include uk hobby/part time makers who visit this site). I am interested to know the extent of knife making in the uk. Maybe we could start a list and add to it?

Kevin.

I saw by your profile that you formerly served as a police officer (I assume in the UK?) and presently live in Florida. I served on the St. Petersburg PD from 1949 through 1959. Are you a member of the Florida Custom Knifemakers Association? Many of the members there are amongst my best friends. I am a moderator on sheathmaking and leather craft on knifeforums.com and knifemakersguildforums.com and a frequent contributor to custom knifedirectory.com and bladeforums.com ----Please forgive me for intruding as I did see that you did not desire any email contact through British Blades. If you would care to further this conversation, please email me--- Martin (Sandy) Morrissey

Martin (Sandy).
Hi Martin. Thanks for contacting me. Not being able to contact me via e mail is a mistake on my part as I do not mind anyone contacting personaly on my e mail. I need to correct that in my user cp.
I joined the Florida Knifemakers Association at their show last month and met a lot of friendly people there. I am planning to have a table there next year if I can pluck up the courage:D..

Maybe we will be able to meet sometime in the future.....I could certainly learn a great deal just from talking to you. I live in mid central Florida (Lake County).
Best regards.
Kevin.

ps..I see that you live in the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia........I hiked part of the AT trail starting at Springer Mountain and through into North Carolina. It is one of the most beautiful areas I have seen and I hope to one day continue my hike and complete the full trail...my user name used to be 'trail angel'..( my wife was a trail angel and that s how I met her...in Georgia!)

Just to jump in here Kevin, (confusing with all these Martyn/Martin people about ;))

....This list of UK makers you mention, perhaps that could be the primary mission of the newly created British Custom Cutlers Association - it would have to include ex-patriates of course ;)

Hmmmm, something to think about.
