If you make knives and want to do it cheaply, then an angle grinder is for you. It's quicker than hand filing, it saves on expensive belts and its quick to master. Even a quality 115mm grinder from Bosch or Makita is inexpensive and the discs are economical, just remember to use the edge rather than the flat and buy them from an engineers supplier like Screwfix or Axminster rather than the exorbitant prices at Focus or most other DIY stores.
You need to clamp the blade very tightly and remember the blade can get very hot and also bend so be prepared to straighten it out. You can grind the bevels and profile with it. You can rough out a lot of blades quickly then spend time learning to refined the bevels on the belt grinder or file. Its a great tool to speed up your learning and production.
