This is a competition cutter im making for myself.
Forged from 52100 bearing race this was a right pain to get right. First of all it was a bearing race which was a bit of a pain to get straight, then I had to forge the handle flat and of even thickness, this was a complete ass to do, it was taperd and it doesnt move very easily under the hammer so just getting the 5" of handle to an even thickness was rather hard., then I had to completely re-forge the taper because it was only one sided and too steep for the knife. So basically this wasnt the most fun to forge but it was worth it.

Not hardend yet as I havnt decided what im going to do. Ive been trying different things with off cuts and the toughest ive found is a triple quench followed by two 240c temper cycles. This gives a very fine grain (finer than three normalisig cycles) and is very hard to snap.

It will be full tang (obviously) , it has a gentle distal taper from 5mm to 2mm near the tip. It will be a convex grind and will have a handrubbed finish. Its got a 10" blade and a 5" handle to comply with comp rules.
Im hoping to get some desert ironwood for the handle but its soo expensive over here im open to suggestion.

Thanks for looking.

Don't forget to drill the lanyard hole at the front!
Any wood you like would be my advice.
Something you like to hold in comfort.
I don't like the bit of leather lots of paracord types as I find too much pressue on the hands especially in 2X4 chopping,
Equally I didn't like the rubbery handle of the Dogfather, too little control.
My current fave is horn handle with paracord wrap, though it really is just getting the handle right for your hand.
Start fat, hit things and thin down.
Love the blade BTW

Would you mind resizing that to 800 pixels wide? Thanks.

Do you think Purpleheart would look ok on this? I cant work it out, ive never used or seen purpleheart on a knife like this.

Purpleheart is the only wood ive got thats the right size so I aint got much choice.

that is nice looking :) yeah 52100 can be a pain to forge but makes nice blades

I think a kinda wrought look would fit it so I'd go for English red oak. sanded to 220 and then back to grit 80 for control and grip (i use that for hammer handles) and then lots of hot linseed oil

and yes make sure you start with a too thick handle and then work down as fluffy said

Great looking blade!
I had similar problems getting scales to fit on this machete, the purpleheart worked quite well;

Edge how hard is that rubber? Do you have any problems with the handle pins digging into your hands?

Thanks everyone

I saw some of the rubber handles the Dutch guys had at Owens Hammerin' and the material is ideal for the job of competition cutting. Excellent shock absorbtion, great grip and pretty solid. You can dig a fingernail into it (just). When I make a cutter, I'll be handling it with that rubber. My only reservation is I don't know how hard wearing it is over a long time. Some rubbers kind of pelletise after long term use and start to peel in strange onion skin layers. There was no evidence of that happening after the cutting comp at Owens, but if you'll be using it a lot, who knows? Anyway they got the rubber for real cheap so it's nothing to replkace it if it wears out. The purpleheart would look really nice too especially with white liners, but because of the 2x4 task, me I would look at the rubber

Parbajtor
you know where they got the rubber or where one can get some ?
I have one set of rubber scales but they are really hard can't mark it with a finger nail

Hi Cutting lads
I will get some more in one ore two weeks so if you want some blocks of rubber I can sent it to you.
The price I will no when I get it so you will pay for the block and sending cost for the UK . For sending to the UK is 0-500 gr €7,40 and for 500-2 kg €9,75 I think
I don't no what a block will weigh.

That would be great - I've had a good old search and can't find anything suitable over here so far!

I'm not suggesting you nick anything here but the last time I was in ikea they had rubber mats on blocks that worked as pallet protectors.

If your ikea is like mine then these mats get torn and decent sized pieces of rubber are always lying around. If it was me I would pick up one or two of these or maybe ask one of the workers if you could have them rather than him/her binning them.

That does involve going going to ikea though... :D
