Right well i have been meaning to do this for a long time, so here it goes.

update new pics and extended review as promised!!!;)

i have alterd the whole review and added in red some info about its use over the last year.

I have always like the look of this little knife and have read many execllent reviews on American forums and websites. so with this in mind and just liking the look of the little wolf pup i went ahead and bought one.

well i have now had this knife almost a year and its still going strong. its been used quite a bit for the odd task here and there and still looks great.

SPEC; TOPS wolf pup

Length Overall, 5 1/4"
Length Blade, 2 1/2"
Cutting Edge, 2 1/2"
Thickness Blade, 5/32"
Weight, 4 oz
Blade Stee,l 1095 High Carbon Alloy RC 58
Blade Color, Tactical Black
Handle Material, Black/green Linen Micarta
Sheath Material, Kydex with a Metal Clip

As you can see by the spec its not very big, well ok its tiny. It arived in a bubble wrap type bag with a small sticker, saying TOPS wolf pup. I removed it from the bag and pulled the knife out of its sheath (more on the sheath latter). first thoughts, It feels very solid in the hand and glides from one hold to another very easily. The picture below shows the wolf pup next to the spyderco UKPK.

As i glanced over the little thing i could tell it is very well made and looked to be of high quality. all the edges are rounded, there are no gaps in the handle and the grind is even. I have never held a Micarta handle before this knife and i am very impresed. it provieds a nice tactile grip and looks nice too, with the diffrent colours. there are also white liners between the tang and the micarta.

The handle is quite substantial part of the knife but diserpears into your hand when you grip it. As you can see from the picture below, it is quite wide. this provides a nice lump of grip to handle and lessens stress from prolonged use.

When i first recived the wolf pup the edge was very dull, this was due to an high degree edge angle. which i belive to be a shame, all knifes (production or custom) should come with a good sharp edge. so onward i went to rectifiy the problem. i took out the lansky system and put in a complete new edge at 20 degrees. (took over 1 and half hours to put this edge on, the was a lot of hard material to remove). now with this new edge it would actually cut paper;) and even shave wood. it even shaved hair of my arm. i tried i few feather sticks but it really didnt do this very well. then again im not very good at them. i realy dont know what this knife is desgined to do, but by its shape i would guess for skinning and some utility tasks. i can now disagree with the feather stick comment. it produces them fine:) , it was my method. i have repidily maniged to get nice tight long curls of wood which took to flame from a few sparks from a fero rod. below are a few of the most comfortable holds.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y145/Edd-UK/for%20sale/IMG_0996.jpg

Now on to the sheath. its a kydex jobbie and very well made to. it holds the knife nice and tight. the belt/ gear clip is very strong. anything you clip it to it will stay fixed to. it also piviots around a full 360 degrees. this sheath has provided to be excellent, very comfy to use in croos draw.

When this review was written i had only used the knife for the odd little task, now as time had passed i can comment on its use. The wolf pup looks like a one task skining knife but has provided to be usefull in other tasks. i have found it to be a great parcel/box cutter and odd job knife. the grip and blade shape angle your cuts for very precise cutting, tho the blade thickness has not helped much. i have given it a try at skinning a rabbit but i found that the width of the blade to be a drag when trying to move the blade around. for a larger animal i would expect this knife to be fine. the handle has provided to be very comfy and non slippy even when damp. with a bit of practice this knife can produce great feather sticks, tho i would not recomend this knife for general woodland tasks due to the blade shape. in the kitchen its dredfull, the blade is to thick and to short. i suspect this knife may be usefull for things not to be talked about on this website!

In conclusion.

This is a usefull little knife which could be better with a thiner blade geometry. This could be modifided by thining the scandi like bevels, but the black coating would be removed in the processes. the knife has been easy to maintain and easily taken and kept a sharp edge. the grip is wonderfull, providing a secure hold in most grips. a nice little feature is the notches at the back of the handle providing a little extra grip. i would mark this knife 70 out of 100.

pros.
- well made
- great handle
- stays sharp and easy to keep sharp
- good sheath with strong clip
- its been a great box cutter

cons.
- not the best EDC blade shape, but still ok for general tasks.
- very thick blade so not a very efficient slicer.
- quite heavy for a little knife.
-the blade geometry.

Right well i have been meaning to do this for a long time, so here it goes.

but first I apologise for the bad photo quality :(

I few months ago i bought a tops wolf pup. I have always like the look of this small knife and have read many other execllent reviews on American forums.

As i glance over the little thing i could tell it is very well made and is of very high quality. I have never held a Micarta handle before this knife and i am very impresed. People have said its is colder than wood, very true too. It is not very natural in feel at all but provides excellent amout of grip It has also been called ugly but this example of micarta is very beautiful (well it least in my opinion).

When i first recived the wolf pup it was very dull, so with a bit of sharpening it did improve very rapidly but still was dull compared to my other knifes. so i took out the lansky system and put in a complete new edge at 25 degrees (took over 1 and half hours to put this edge on). now with this new edge it would actually cut paper and shave wood even better (it exceled at removing hair of my arm).i tried i few feather sticks but it really didnt do this very well. then again im not very good at them. i realy dont know what this knife is desgined to do, but by its shape i would guess for skinning and some utility tasks. the steel is one of the best carbon steels i have ever used, recommended :). below are a few of the most comfortable holds.

now on to the sheath. its a kydex jobbie and very well made to. it holds the knife quite tight but with strong shaking upside down, it will fall out. the clip on the other hand is very strong. anything you clip it to it will stay fixed to.

pros.
- well made
- great handle
- stays sharp
- good sheath

cons.
- wierd blade shape
- thick blade so not very efficient slicer.

Great little knife, from the look of it.

It looks a lot like a small skinner that I designed a three or four of years ago. I intended to make the blade from D2 to go into a very nice bit of material I picked up on a beach.

I dug out my notebook from back then, just to have another look...

I really need to get that little monster made.

KKK.

Nice review Edd. :) I have a Tops Ferret model, very near the same size as the Wolf Pup - I find the handle a bit easier to use. Think they would make a nice pair - maybe we should put them together and see if they breed

Still liked your review.

i like that idea then we could sell of the offspring 'ferret pup' or 'wolfet':D how thick is the ferret, the wolf pup is almost to thick in my opinion.

Hi Edd, OAL is 4 13/16 inch (123mm) Blade is 2 inches (50) and is 1/8 inch thick (3mm) as the handle is almost 3 inches its quite comfortable to use. The horrible kydex sheath is very tight on my knife - can't shake it out - it came with a small karabiner already fitted.

Like the idea of a"Ferret Pup" :D
