Hi guys,
i´ve only made ONE sheath before. please keep this in mind.
i´m trying to come upp with a sheath for a skinner i´ve made.
so i satt and drew this. will it work? is there something special i should think about when making it ???
the black line is the knife, the blue is the outline of the sheath,
and the green is just a strap for holding it in place. in the picture you can also see the belt loop drawn in pencil.
thankful for all the help i can get.
Roger.

Ok, the one immediate problem is that you won't be able to get the knife in and out of that sheath, because the widest part of the blade is wider than the neck of the sheath. You can solve this problem by continuing the line of the left side (as its seen in your drawing) right to the top ie don't cut out the top lef corner.
I'm not sure that the strap is actually doing anything there, it would work better on the left side, although if you wet form the sheath around the knife you should be able to get a good friction fit.
The final thing is to make sure that you allow enough leather to accomodate the depth of the handle when you make the pattern. One way to do this is to use a strip of paper to measure round the knife, remembering that you will need to allow for the width of the blade as it is drawn.

I can see what you are trying to do there, the sheath would be open along the spine of the knife apart from a portion at the bottom? I dont know if this would give you enough movement to be able to put the knife in and out of the sheath.
The shape of the sheath is nice though and is actually workable if you simply change the direction of the strap across the knife, lose the stitching across the curve on the left but stitch up the spine instead. I have altered your diagram a bit to show what I mean....

What do you think?

Oh I see, I misinterpreted your diagram a bit, although I still think that in order to have enough play to get the knife out it would end up being too loose, even with a strap.
Tiffers' diagram is pretty much what I had in mind, only explained better and a bit more elegant.

I dunno about the more elegant bit! Now you can see why I need to get myself sorted with a graphics tablet and so on! :D
Sometimes I find it difficult to explain in words, its easier to draw a piccie!

Agree with Tiffers. That'd be the way I'd do it.
Looks good to me Tiffers. You done this before? :D :D
