Anyone got a BSA Meteor back sight, and front sight spare?
I can and will make up my own from steel if I cannot source them, but I was hoping that I could be saved the effort...

I am asking around here in NZ for original hardware, but I might just make up a diopter peep sight in the spare time I do not have...the front site will be a carbon fibre post.
I used to shoot at 800 to 2000 metre distances, so 10-15 metres will be somewhat confusing. :)
My garage/workshop is 11 metres long, and I do not want to use an optic sight. More fun with "iron" sights... :)

shooting matchsticks at 20 metres is fun, especially if pushups are the punishment for missing...

I have just had a work mate offer me a Lee-Enfield peep sight and front site!
His .303 is falling apart ( his words ), so we will see if this works...
The pushups are a throw back to the Army.
Hit a steel dustbin at 1000 metres, with a FN FAL using iron sites ( max 600 metres )with no more than 3 shots... or run to 500 metre mark, run back, 25 pushups...AND start again....
We could practice as much as possible.. nothing like a box of Federal 170 grain lying next to you... the box contained 2000 cartridges :)

Sounds like fun :O
Just getting back into shooting thanks to a couple of friends, looking forward to it a lot as I used to do quite a bit a few years ago

I am going to re design the ex stock to a thumbhole, raised checkpiece, and straight trigger... and then paint it, colour un-decided at the moment. Maybe a bi-pod...

Simon, thanx for those sites... very interesting.
I will see what my mate comes up with, and whether it is usable, or not. I will post a pic in Commons, if all works out.

Zackerty, if you planning on putting a bipod on this, don't do it. 'pods and springers do not mix, you won't hit anything and you'll end up constantly beasted :D
On airgunbss, they go into the whys and the wherefores, but basically it comes down to the recoil pattern of spring powered rifles. They recoil in 3 or 4 ways (mostly at the same time) IIRC is backwards, upwards and to the side (all in 1 motion) then the end of the spring nearest the butt tries to go forwards to meet the piston and it starts all over again.

Thanx Simon, I have decided not to use a bipod anyway, it was just me rambling on.
I have redesigned the stock profile in my mind, and what you say makes sense, so thanks again. I do not know if I am trying to pretty up a mongrel or not, and I have to get the pressure up first. The seal or spring might need to be renewed...
I have quite got attached to the idea of a peep sight, so we will see how the one my mate is giving me, shapes up. The alignment of the barrel might bash the peep sight idea...then it will be back to basics.

Meteors are accurate rifles make no mistakes, perfect for target and light hunting work. The best rifle BSA ever made was the superstar, an underleaver with a revolving breech, but very heavy.
The spring is easy to replace, and I think the meteor has cut in dovetales to the reciever making the crown seal easy to (do both jobs at the same time), rather than my Lightning which has a seperate dovetail mount fixed to the reciever.
I to like to tinker with stocks, I made 1 for my Super10 (+ other mods), the profiling worked out fine, but the inletting leaves alot to be desired. I'm now working on a design not to dis-similar to the Acuraccy International stock for my Daystate Harrier, using of all things an archery riser grip as the pistol grip, and the main frame made out of balsa and fibreglass. But I need to have the rifle regulated first.

Methinks we will talk more on this matter.... :)
I have an old walnut blank sleeping in the garage, and I was going to use it for knife handles... a change in thought might be in the offing :)
Thumbhole with stippling? :)

me thinks we will indeed :D
You can always use the offcuts to make scales ;)
I'll email you a pick of my S10 when I get back from holiday at the weekend and you can see my effort. Its heavy at around 7 kg all up, but it is very, very stable in the shoulder. And I stippled mine to, with a modified centre punch and a scrap of wood, it took me 14 hours!!!!

I have just checked the barrel, and there is very little rifling left!!!!
My mate found the Meteor in his attic about 3 years ago, and recently removed the action, sprayed it black, and sanded down the stock.
I will finish off the stock when I get the time.
I clamped the Meteor in a padded vice, and fired 6 pellets into a cardboard box, about 10 meters away.
Result..ONE slightly enlarged hole, about 5mm in diameter!!!
Pressure is way down, as the pellets will not penetrate a softdrink can at that distance, but dents it halfway thru' the can...
If accuracy is consistant, but pressure is down due to oversize barrel bore, I will still complete the project...
A new barrel is out of the question...

Hi there
I have worked with a few spring guns, have a .25 Patriot and a .177 WK 77. Barrels dont wear much, lack of power probably due to weak spring, and/or worn seals. Mr Young has the cure for both problems and he takes C/C orders over the phone.
Good luck.

This is my S10 stock, it may give you a few ideas.
Its now a carbine with a Logun silencer as that silencer wouldn't fit.

Resurrecting an old thread...
I loaned the Meteor to a friend of mine, to help his youngest daughter learn to shoot.
He made up some cheap and nasty sights in the meantime...
My friend is an amateur gunsmith, and without asking me, stripped the action, polished the spring chamber, and re-sealed the chamber area etc.
It whacks those pellets home now!!!
I really must get some iron sights for it, so a call to Auckland will be happening soon...
Hmm
how similar are parts for this gun and the cadet that came before it? I have one that needs new springs, seals and maybe other stuff. I liked the feel of it when it worked though

I have some bits and pieces, and I WILL make my own. I made a glass front site a few years ago, with a triangle painted on it...and I might do this again, as it worked well.

Thanks Rapid...that works out the same, though, with postage.
The airgun looks like a dog's breakfast, so I cannot quite justify the expense at the moment... I am trying to get a reasonable IZH 46M air pistol at the moment, so the Meteor will get a patch job till later...

Ron Young at Young's Airguns, says that the sights are a bad plastic, and eventually break.
The one I had as a teenager had plastic sights, and were quiet durable, so who knows?
