View Full Version : Kifaru pack sizing
Me: "Hello, my name's [mirage] and I'm a geardo."
Omnes: "Hello, [mirage]."
I have an inkling to buy a 72-hour BOB/EDC rucksack/manbag/airline carry-on bag.
The last bit is the awkward one: It would have to comply with airline carry-on dimensions.
SqueezyJet (http://www.easyjet.com/en/planning/baggage.html) allow 56x45x25cm
RyanAir (http://www.ryanair.com/en/questions/cabin-baggage-allowance) allow only 55cm x 40cm x 20cm
Is a Kifaru X-Ray the biggest Kifaru that conforms to those regulations?
If there's a bigger one that still conforms, which is it?
This has to be a do-everything bag.

Yellowhammer might be the chap to ask, but a Marauder would be close to that size. I think RCS has one, so perhaps he could measure his for you?
I just tried the Kifaru website, but it seems to be down for me at the moment - for the best perhaps :C
Just measured my express and it just squeezes in to the smaller restrictions, certainly be OK on Easyjet uness of course you ram it full of stuff and have the lid straps loosened right off.
The Marauder is 53cm x 31cm x 17cm.
Hope that helps midge.

Rob
Thanks BL and Rob.
So I'd be looking at a pack roughly the same height as a Marauder, but a little wider and "deeper".
Suggestions, fellow addicts?

Its worth noting that the current Zulu has 21" stays but the older one has stays which are the same as the Marauder so it should be able to be pushed into a box the same height (if that makes sense) the newer one couldn't.
I've just measured my marauder which is fairly stuffed and get around 48x38x21cm
Is there a weight limit on the carry on? They claim about 2kg but I don't think that includes a waist belt since it's an optional extra
It's pretty hard to get an accurate measurement but the xray is roughly 50x38x22cm. The depth is variable though and if the pack is jammed solid it will be more than 22cm deep in the middle because of the lumbar pad, but I'm sure you could punch it in :)

What about the Zulu?
Have seen posts on Kif forum of people travelling with that, obviously not stuffed to the gills though.

I take it that the detailed illustration you have so kindly provided depicts a Gen 2 Zulu?
Thanks to all for your help so far.

I'm assuming this is for a single bag travel strategy Mirage? If not, the modularity of Kifaru bags will allow you to take the stays out and the hipbelt off for the air travel portion of your journey and replace them once on the ground. Some packing discipline will allow any of the slightly marginal sizes to fit in the luggage sizing cage.

Yep, the idea is a 48/72 hour BOB/EDC bag.
The only absolute criterion is that it comply with airline carry-on baggage size.

If everything went TU, would you trust Ryan Air to get you safely away? :)
I have seen mention of the Marauder on some of the American forums as being an excellent carry on compliant piece of luggage. Being a panel loader, it has a more "boxed" shape, therefore making best use of the allowable dimensions.
Much depends on who you are flying with - I have seen some pretty big rucks and computer cases going on to transatlantic BA flights - people often taking on more than one too - often done this myself to get round the weight restrictions on the bags for the hold
I use an Xray usually - but had a strict 5 kilo handluggage restriction this time coming over on an cheapo airbus flight - so didn't use the Kif at all - just dug out a waxed canvas tote from under the stairs
Just worth remembering that the Kif bags are themselves heavy
