Come on guys ! There are at least a dozen certified cutters in the UK (I should know, I did the certifications :) ) This is the only dedicated knife show in the UK and the best opportunity for us to show what we can do with a suitable blade after a little coaching and a little practice. I can't believe that only 3 of the BladeSports UK guys are going to be at the show...
I think I drowned last time...
Is it IN the tent this time?

When is your next training/certification day, Mr. Longstrider sir?
Sir ? Last time someone called me 'Sir' they wanted money ! :O
I'll be available to discuss things at the show as I will be there all morning setting up ready for the cut in the afternoon.
I am hoping to get a certification (and competition) day organised some time in July.
If nothing else is possible then I may take time out from bashing steel at JackJacks Hammer-In to take a few guys for their certification.
I'm afraid that with The World Championship at the beginning of next month, then Knives UK, I'm a little pressed for time to do anything sooner.
Keep your eye on this section of the forum though, as this is where I'll post details of any event I'm organising.
Thanks Longstrider, don't know if I can make it to Bristol, but if all goes well I'll be at Jacks Hammer-in, looking forward to discussing it further!

Ian, I will try to get down to the cutting do. But jet lag and not being at work for 2 weeks will probably conspire to me not getting there. I will keep a look out for the July do, but I am only at home for about 8 days in July, and none of them are weekends. In fact I might as well retire for July.
Good luck at The Blade Show.
Mick.

Well guys, we had a great day. Beautiful sunshine and a great audience :)
With the opportunity to show a well informed and very appreciative crowd of spectators what a proper cutting competition actually is so many of you missed this chance to shine. This was the ONLY dedicated knife show in the UK calendar and yet so few turned up to cut. After the fantastic effort that Mike puts into organising the show, and the work that went into making the cutting comp/demo happen I was ashamed that more Certified Cutters didn't turn up to take part in this showcase event.
The day was saved was those who did manage to attend and by the enthusiasm and keen interest shown in so many aspects of the event by the spectators asking a host of questions afterwards. It was good to see that so many of them wanted to know more about the skills and techniques required.
Competitions cannot happen without competitors. I am sure that all those who failed to make it to the event can justify their absence in their own minds, but they missed a great opportunity and a fantastic day out.

Just to add to what Ians said this isn't some huge well attended show with thousands of people. We are small and we are niche and every year hangs by thread so it's a use it or lose it message. It might not be the whole show but I can't see why Ian would want to drag the huge amount of stuff across the country just for him Si and Farid to chop stuff up.
Why certify if you don't want to cut?
I've been to Knives UK two years in a row and its my intention to go again next year too, If its possible could you do some certification at Jack Jacks? as I'd love to have a go next year. It looks like a cracking thing to get involved with. Thanks for putting the effort in Ian.

Rob

Rob : I would be happy to do Certifications at Jacks if we can sort out a suitable bench (with 2x4 holders). It would be even better if more than one guy wanted to do so there. I do all I can, but the difficulty in finding suitable venues is a stumbling block that prevents more cutting days and competitions from happening.
I would love to see enough interest from those in the North of the country who tend not to make it to the predominantly Southern Hammer-Ins, to not only organise a venue, but want to take part. Sadly this is yet to happen.
I'm happy to put the time in taking folks through their BladeSports Certifications if only we can find enough suitable venues. In the mean-time I'll check with Jack to see if he's happy with sorting out a bench for us to use at his place during the Hammer-In weekend.

I would have been well happy if I could have made a trip back to England for this, and I'm still tempted to start a 'teach me about cutting comps' thread.

I like the sound of a thread like that. Don't wanna start it myself now, cos you mentioned it first.
My thanks goes to Mike for a wonderful show, it gets better as time goes by and it brings like minded people together.
It was heartbreaking to see Longstrider dragging two cutting competition benches all this way, assembly time plus all the stuff provided by him for us to cut just to see two people turn up to cut. There are plenty of certified cutters out there in the UK who could make the effort to come and contribute to this sport, why are you certified if you cannot make an effort one day a year ? All of us certified cutters need to come together and support the sport, support Longstrider for all the effort he puts into the set up time and also it is good for the show to put on a cutting demonstration.
Each journey starts with a single step, take that step forward.
We need to make more of an effort to make it work.

Thanks for the effort Ian, it was appreciated :)
I still ache, a LOT, and definitely proved if you dont sharpen your knife a cutting comp can be VERY hard work
Be good to see some more people certifying and I'll help set things up at Jacks as usual :)

I appreciate you guys frustrations, but a trip to Bristol on fathers day may well be prohibitive for a lot of people.....

Perhaps starting a more direct thread would help? Perhaps in the EMCCU forum?

Did I miss another certification date that has happened or am I correct in thinking that there are actually only 7 certified cutters in the country?

Gosh, I was certificated (certified is such an ugly word, suggests all sorts of things).
I'll bring a Workmate2000 to Jack's on the Sunday as long as I can get it in the back of the XJS
I didn't go because there is life, which is why I don't get to lots of things

I think there was a certification day at Owen's 2-3 years ago when Ed Schemp was over. I was there as I remember looking at Ed's steel samples and there was a lot of cutting going on.

Last one was last year I think, at Ians work place in MK, thats where Rob came along to.
Had a feeling you and Fluff were cutters, Mick as well, but wasnt sure
To be fair I would be hard pushed to make it on my tod if it wern't for staying with a mate in Wales the night before meaning I was only 45 mins away on Sunday.
By the way, when did you last cut in a comp as you are no longer certified if you dont cut for 2 years and the mucking about at Jacks doesnt really count towards that :(

Oh, Oh, I'm pretty certain I was cutting at Bristol last year as I was the only one with a brolly in the pouring rain
I wonder if that counts?

Alright Shirley, calm down! If you note I was quoting Stew, which normally means I would be talking to him...its a forum thing us under 60's know about ;)
As it happens I was wrong about Stew as well, as he did indeed drive me to the cutting day last year
So, no deaths, but some twisted knickers somewhere along the way it seems :P

The thing is Ian is now the only acting referee with Owen not involved.
He can't go everywhere when people want to learn to do this or to compete.
If no-one trains in the company of their fellow enthusiasts (keep it safe folks) there is little incentive to compete.
If the very few qualifying competitions that are run (wearing Ian to a frazzle) are the only way of staying certified
you quickly end up with no-one in the club.
If you remember the whole idea of setting the UK version up was to make us an experimental group.
Three years no cutting would make more sense (it only needs a quorum) to allow Ian to outreach and someone else to get qualified (some few ideally) to replace Owen and Owen's site

Cutting competitions in the US used to be just a bit of fun at the end of a knife do/hammer-in. Now it has become more commercialised and in typical American style, called the World Championships. It is now, no more than a way of promoting makes or makers of knives.
Credit to Ian for all the hard work he has put into the UK Blade Sports thing and cutting comps, plus helping to set things up abroad, but the problem I see is the English temperament, we can't be arsed with all this formal s*** and just want to muck about cutting stuff and have a laugh, more than likely in someones back garden.

Think you might have hit the nail on the head there :D
I think we should still persevere with getting it out and about, the Gun Mart chap at the show seemed to think it would go down well at the country ganme fairs, that would be a massive step to getting more people involved and spreading the knives not eveil message :)
Rgds
P.S
To be clear, I am not adverse to the mucking about...long as its safe and I dont nearly loose another finger :C
Si, you're on video...
Pirouettes become you but not with a comp cutter in your hand :O

No, I'm not over 60 but I do have my knickers in a twist after some of the comments in this thread.
Who froze cutting at Owen's? (Gad that place can get cold)
Bardster
ben1p
yellowhammer
to name just three who haven't been mentioned
cutting at Jack's is fun and attracts almost everyone who is there, with swords or regulation sized knives.
Larking around in the back garden on your own is dull and dangerous not least because there is no-one there to say stop!
Get a group together and you can go a long way to reducing the chance of accidents and increasing the chance of help and it's enjoyable.
but it isn't necessarily to Bladesports rules and it can still improve the way you use your tools.
If everyone who has done the course helps others we have more who want to do it but regimes aren't us
Been following this thread. Cutting is fun but I'm limited on time with work and other commitments, like scouts. Plus this year seem to have lots of stag dos so weekends are taken up.
I didn't actually certify at Owen's. I froze riding there, and it was so damn cold that we just played around with knives and generally cut stuff. Then I froze even more riding home!! Man it was cold!
I didn't actually realise that Owen's wasn't going to be used going forwards, that's a real shame.

I love the idea and would love to have a go but as benp1 says, life has a horrible way of intruding on the fun in your life.
I left it far too late to comtemplate going down to Bristol this year but have every intention of going next year.
Even then it's a 7-8 hour round trip.A bit like a lot of the meet-ups, are any near me in Yorkshire?
I would love to come and play but can't afford to travel the length and width of the country every weekend
