The left and middle holes are for pins, the rear/right one is for lanyard, and will be exposed.

The jimping also did not go quite according to plan, I'm not sure if I'm going to bother trying to fix it or not. Basically it needs a couple more jimps(?) at the front end.

Can't wait to get the scales prepped and on it...

Here's my 'Wicked Edge' sharpening system along with some comments on its use;

Although this is quite an expensive system I've found it worth every penny due to the time saving and consistency of sharpening it achieves.
I mainly use this on my Sgian Dubh Blades but it's great for keeping the kitchen knives sharp as well :)
Here's some short notes which may be of interest;

It important to keep it steady on a rigid / heavy base - I've mounted it on some scraps of chipboard and ply with the sharpener raised up from the rest of the board.
The stones / strops sit on short pieces of dowel set into the main base board.
I have a selection of stones / strops and use cutting oil on most of them mainly to stop dust being made during use (I doubt that you really want to be breathing it).
The Allen Key (Hex Wrench) which comes with the system is quite small so I use a far larger one (made by Britool, lower left of photo)
I wrap rubber bands around where the guide rods join the jig and this just helps to keep the rod upright and ready for use (hard to explain, try it and you'll see that it helps)

I'll try to add to this, but just ask if you have any questions....

December 24, 2012 about 14:00am - Christmas Eve

Once the kid fell asleep, he slept like a log. The dogs have taken a liking to him, especially Gizmo, and slept curled up next to him - traitors! I let him sleep and spent the time sharpening a short length of wood into a stake, for the kid to carry. At least he'll be safe if we run into any vampires! Actually it's more of a psychological thing; I've noticed that with the spear I feel more enabled, more capable of protecting mself and hopefully giving Ronan a way to defend himself will do the same for him.

Once he finally woke up, we spent a long time talking about what to do. For an 8 year old he is extremely sensible, and having somebody to chat to throws a completely different light onto things. Up until now I haven't had any long-term thought out plan, I've been surviving from day-to-day making it up as I go along, but as Ronan pointed out that the zombies don't do anything unless they are near people. If they don't eat or drink anything they will only be able to survive for a short time, possibly week or two without drinking? Maybe month without eating? So all we have to do is find somewhere that we will be alone and where we can find sufficient food to keep ourselves alive for a month or so.

After much discussion we have decided to head for a protected woodlands that I sometimes take the dogs to called Monks Wood. Monks Wood is an ancient Ash and Oak wood, over 2000 years old. On my walks there I've seen wild garlic growing and there are plenty of rabbit's warrens, the acorns will also provide an alternative to our current diet of stinging nettle soup. By my reckoning it's about 20 miles from where we are, but as we'll have to go cross country and avoid as many roads and villages as possible it's likely to take us 2 to 3 days to get there.

We spent the rest of the day walking north, back towards the A14, where we stopped early and made camp for the night amongst some trees at the top of a small hill. The area has been used as a fly-tipping site sometime in the past and so we scavenged through the rubble and rubbish that has been left and found some real gems!

This should make it much easier to carry the things we have collected!

Some pieces of broken slate and various roofing and paving tiles, including some porcelain from a smashed toilet!

There are loads of rabbits around so we spent some time trying to catch one for dinner! The dogs thought it was great fun, but they didn't come close. Ronan decided to "stake" out a rabbit hole until the rabbit poked it's head out - he was very upset when the rabbit bolted from a different burrow!

Finally we had to settle for stinging nettle soup (again), but while it was cooking I used the flint knife to scrape the plastic off of some automotive wire I found last time I was at the A14 and used the core wire to make some rabbit snares. Tomorrow is Christmas and it would be nice for us to have something different to eat for a change. I've noticed that I'm becoming more easily tired and short-tempered and suspect it might have to do with not getting enough varied nutrition.

This looks like a likely place to catch breakfast! Spot the snare?

We're camped near the top of a hill and the wind seems to be blowing stronger up here, so we used what we could find lying around to make a lean-to windbreak and settled down in it's cover for the night.

December 24, 2012 about 3:00am - Christmas Eve

I woke in the middle of the night with the dogs staring into the darkness and growling softly. The campfire had had almost burnt itself out with only few remaining embers glowing faintly amongst the ashes. I had slept with my legs in the plastic bag and my trousers were damp from condensation inside the bag, but it was the dogs growling that had awakened me.

I struggled out of the bag and readied the spear, peering into the darkness, when I heard a small voice call out "Hello? Is there anybody there?" It was a child's voice, sounding young and frightened. The dogs fell silent at my command and I called into the darkness, "I'm here, you can come forward. I won't hurt you." I hadn't heard a zombie utter a sound previously, but to be on the safe side I renewed my grip on the spear and crouched down into the bushes. Some twigs snapped and a small boy stepped out from behind the trees, into the clearing that I was camped in. He wore dirty jeans and a brown puffer jacket. His blonde hair was ruffled and his face dirt-streaked. Two clear tracks traced their way down his cheeks where tears had washed a path through the dirt.
"I saw the glow from your campfire. Please can I warm myself by it, I'm so cold!", he said.
My heart melted at the sight of him. My last few days had been a constant battle to stay alive and keep myself fed and warm, how had a child managed?

I quickly tossed some wood on the fire and blew on the embers until the flames crackled and leaped. The dogs, ever eager for attention, took the opportunity to welcome the newcomer with wet, doggy licks and excited wagging of their tails. Instead of being fearful, like children sometimes are, he patted and cuddled them, wrapping his arm's around Gizmo's neck and burying his face in his fur.

He says his name is Ronan and he lives ... lived, in a town about 10 miles south of where I currently am. Apparently he slept right through the songs of the angels that I heard the night the rapture happened! Talk about the sleep of the innocent. He woke up to the sound of an explosion the following morning! Looking out his bedroom window he could see flames and thick black smoke rising from the middle of town. None of his family seemed to know what was happening and the phones, radio and television were dead, so his father got dressed and went out in the car to find out what was happening and see if he could help - that was the last time any of the family saw him. Later on the same day when his dad didn't come home, Ronan's mom went out to look for him, leaving Ronan and his sister behind with the warning not to open the door to anyone.

They ate cold baked beans and bread for dinner and then went to bed. The next morning, when neither of his parent's had returned, Ronan and his sister had breakfast and then got dressed and went round to the neighbors to see if they knew what had happened. They found the house in disarray and all of the family dead, literally ripped apart! The kid's screams drew some of the zombies that caught his sister as they fled and since then Ronan has been running and hiding in the fields.

It took a while for me to understand his story as he kept on crying in the middle of it and getting the order of events confused. Normally I would have made him some tea, but there's nothing normal anymore. So instead I covered my hand with the plastic bag and picked nettles and made him a bowl of nettle soup. It still tastes as bland as ever, but the kid wolfed it down and then nodded off to sleep next to the fire while I sat awake, keeping the flames high and pondering what to do now. It seems that fate has doubled my problem by giving me another mouth to feed, but I can't simply leave him alone out here in the middle of winter. It's evident that my current system of just wandering aimlessly around the countryside isn't going to cut it, with a small boy to look after, so I'll just sit here by the fire for a while and try to work out what to do next.

The A14 is a stretch of over-congested, under-maintained road that is a main transport artery for the region. Before all this started I used to watch the sides of the road whenever I drove down it as quite often one could spot broken coil springs lying in the grass next to the road. It took us most of the morning walking northwards to reach the A14, skirting several small villages on our way and giving any houses a wide berth. It wasn't completely uneventful because we found several useful objects besides the roads and pathways as we went.

A couple of bottles, which will give us a means to carry drinking water.

The A14 is ghostly, normally carrying 1000's of cars an hour it now stands mostly deserted except for a few stationary vehicles, some of which have obviously been involved in pile-ups.

I can't see any signs of life from here, but I'm going to go down and see what useful things I can find, I'll write up about it when I get back to somewhere I feel is safe again.

December 23, 2012 4:40pm

It's taken all afternoon but I finally feel I've shaken those things. They're freaky, they just sit there doing nothing until they see you and then quick as anything they're after you. And they can move! Seems that they've kept some sort of basic muscle control and maybe rudimentary intelligence of some sort. They can walk and run but they don't seem to feel pain and they won't dodge things, but I'm rambling, let me go back to the beginning.

I approached the A14 carefully, getting as close as I could by moving through a small copse of trees. There didn't seem to be any sign of life, although there were some bodies lying in the road and sitting in cars. Crows had landed on the ones in the road and were eating them, but flapped noisily away when I approached. The bodies were starting to rot and the stench was overpowering. I think if I had eaten more than the acorns in the last few days I probably would have vomited right there. Anyway I was there to see what metal I could find, so I started picking things up off the road. With so many damaged cars around there was no shortage of steel and I started stuffing small pieces into my pockets. Suddenly Gizmo started barking and I turned around to see 2 zombies running towards me! The one had obviously been in an accident or a fight and it's left arm dangled awkwardly, there was nothing wrong with the speed either of them was moving, however!

In my panic I dropped half of the things I had picked up and ran off the road into the farmers' field, calling the dogs as I ran. The field we were in was sloped, so that I was running up hill and by the time I reached the trees on the far side of it, I was gasping for breath and my legs felt like lead. To make matters worse the undamaged zombie was gaining on me rapidly and was now only a few meters behind me! I plunged into the copse, ducking branches, jumping brambles and logs and burst onto the field on it's far side. Glancing over my shoulder I saw the creature had virtually came to a stand-still. It made no attempt to duck under any branches and just ran into them and flailed and shoved it's way through brambles, falling over logs, ignoring the damage that it was doing to itself. Even the dumbest of animals knows enough to duck under branches, and tries to avoid hurting itself.

I jumped a small ditch and sprinted across the next field to the next stand of trees, by the time I had reached their shelter the zombie was less than half way across the field and on loosing site of me amongst the trees it just stopped and stood still in the middle of the field. The dogs and I watched it from the trees for about an hour and it didn't move in all that time, so we headed off in the opposite direction to where we have stopped for the evening, another fortunate find on our way here was a large plastic bag found in a ditch.

This'll provide some extra warmth tonight.

Once we had found a safe place to stay tonight I took a look through my pockets at the haul I had grabbed at the A14:

My scavanging has provided me with:
2 metal pipes (one short, one longer), a broken fan belt, some rubber tread from a tyre, a large galvanized nut, 3 small rectangles of metal with broken rivets in them (I suspect they were some sort of bracket), a short length of automobile wire, several meters of very manky nylon rope, a small triangle of steel, a large cast iron pipe cap, a number plate and a child's shoe that looks like it has been partially eaten (fortunately without a foot in it).

I quickly got a fire going. Well I say quickly, but it took over an hour of persistance. The only 2 bits of metal that produce any sort of spark when hit with a flint are the very short pipe and the small triangular bit of steel. I cleaned the rust off the pipe by rubbing it on a piece of rough stone I found and prepared some kindling.

My firelighting kit

After much banging of rock and steel I finally had a small glowing ember, more by luck than talent, which I transferred to my stick pile.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

Finally a flame!

Once the fire was alight, and with the sun setting I went down to the stream and washed all the grease and grime out of the pipe cap, scrubbing it with handfuls of sand, and then collected stinging nettles (getting stung numerous times) and put them on to boil.

Just like Super Noodles, only green.

While they were cooking I tried my hand at flint knapping and eventually ended up with 2 pieces of flint with reasonably sharp edges that I used to hack a point on a branch, making a spear.

Finally dinner was ready, it tasted a bit like boiled cabbage and had a small oil slick floating on top of it from grime that I didn't manage to get off, but was very filling. Glad it tastes good because I suspect I'm going to be eating a lot of it in the near future.

Dinner is on the table!

There is game about, we've seen rabbits in the morning and again this evening and twice today the dogs have flushed pheasants out the trees but I have no way of catching them - I'm hoping the spear will give me a chance to change that as well as making me feel much more secure.

I'm very satisfied with what I've achieved today, but now it's time to get some sleep, knowing that the birds will wake me at 4 in the morning.

Needless to say after the terrors of yesterday and with nothing but the clothes on my back to keep me warm, I didn't sleep very well. I'm stiff, thirsty, cold and hungry. But mostly I'm cold. Breakfast was a handful of acorns that the squirrels hadn't discovered. I peeled them and then ground them into a paste mixed with a little water. Quite bitter but the first food I've eaten in a few days - wish there was more of them.

If I'm going to survive my current situation my first priority must be to have fire. There is plenty of water available in puddles and ponds, and if I have fire I can boil it to make it safe to drink. I've been thinking about this since I woke up; there seem to be 2 ways to go about lighting a fire that are available to me. Firstly I have my glasses and could probably use a lens to focus the sun. Unfortunately it's winter in England and that means that the sun is hidden by a constant overcast sky, so scratch that idea. My other chance is to make a flint and steel. The Fens where I am has no shortage of flint and so after just a couple of minutes of scrabbling in the dirt I unearthed several decent pieces.

The next thing I need is steel. I've never tried to light a fire with a flint and steel, but I have a suspicion that you want carbon steel to get a spark off of. I fled the house in such a hurry and so unexpectedly that I don't have a single scrap of metal with me, not even a door-key. As an experiment I wasted 10 fruitless minutes trying to strike a spark off of various metal buttons and zips on my jacket and jeans, but unsurprisingly without luck. I'm not prepared to go near houses again, at least not until all my other options have been exhausted there's too much of a chance of running into one of those creatures again, my best bet to find a piece of carbon steel has got to be the A14 motorway. It's several miles away, so I'd better start walking.

December 22, 2012 7:30am

Sometime in the middle of the night the electricity failed, which means that the boiler isn't working, so I woke up in a pretty cold house. Everything seems strangely quiet, I guess I've been so used to some sort of background noise - either the radio playing or cars on the road outside or even the drone of plane engines in the distance that it almost seems unnatural not to hear these sounds. I've decided I'm going to leave the dogs at home and walk into the village and see if anybody has any idea what is going on.

December 22, 2012 12:30pm

The world has gone mad! I walked into the village earlier this morning, as I approached it there were all sorts of signs of violence, as if war had broken out. My first sign that something was terribly wrong was a crashed car in a ditch by the side of the road on the outskirts of the village. There was nobody near it that I could see but on closer investigation I found the terribly mutilated body of a woman in the field nearby! It looked as if she had been physically ripped apart!

There was nothing I could do for her as she was clearly dead, so I continued walking along the road. As I got close to the first houses a man opened an upstairs window and pointed a shotgun at me! We had a shouted conversation where he told me what has happened; apparently the strange lights in the sky the other night weren't aliens but were the Rapture! That's right, the Rapture, like in the bible. "The believers shall enter heaven and the dead shall rise again" sort of thing. Anyway, it seems like all the true believers have ascended to heaven, that's what those streaks of light were, their souls leaving their bodies. Their bodies, however, have remained behind. Bereft of intelligence, emotions and feelings they seek only to kill living people. Apparently they can be killed but because they don't feel pain they will just keep on trying to attack living people until their bodies are so badly damaged that they can no longer move! After being told all of this I was told to leave and with a shotgun pointed at me I wasn't going to argue!

I carefully entered the village, which seemed to be completely empty. If what I was told was true then everybody is either a zombie, or dead, or hiding. As I got near to the pub I became aware of the sound of breaking glass and a loud thumping from a nearby house. I carefully crept up behind a hedge and peered into the garden. Outside the house were about 20 people; men, women and children. They didn't make any sounds but hammered on the front door and smashed windows with their bare hands! I didn't wait to see what was happening but ran most of the way home. Fortunately I live outside the village down a small lane so I'm not likely to have any visitors.

I got home and locked the door before the shaking started. This seems like something out of a video game - "the zombies have risen now it's kill or be killed". Once the adrenaline wore off I felt absolutely shattered. I'm going to have to make some very serious decisions about what I'm going to do; I don't have enough food to hide here indefinitely. Right now though I need to have a rest, I'm absolutely shattered.

December 22, 2012 4:00pm

I came awake to hammering on the door, glass shattering and the dogs going mental! One look outside and I knew that the "zombies" must have followed me home! There were 20 or so people gathered around the front of the door, smashing their fists into it again and again, despite obvious bleeding and broken knuckles. Some of them had smashed the lounge windows but seemed confused about how to climb over the window sill to get into the house. I called the dogs and we fled out the back door, across the garden and through the hedge into the fields beyond!

We have been running for about an hour now and have put some distance between us and those creatures. We obviously can't go back and it is already pretty dark. I hate winter, if it was summer it would still be light. Even worse is that with the heavy cloud cover that we've been having lately it's going to be pitch black in 20 minutes. I'd better find some sort of shelter and sit out the night rather than go round blundering into who knows what in the dark. I just hope the dogs, Gizmo and Loki, will warn me if something comes this way. It's going to be a very cold night without proper shelter, a fire or sleeping bag, the one blessing is the unseasonably warm weather we have been having this winter.

I can't believe this has happened! The world hasn't ended in floods or fire, like everybody predicted but everything is different now from just a few hours ago... I'd better explain.

I woke up to an incredible sound. It was like a mixture of trumpets and choirs and seemed to be coming from everywhere at once. I stumbled out of bed and pulled open the curtains to see the sky on fire! From everywhere bright lights were floating up towards the clouds and the clouds shimmered as if they were alive! I grabbed my phone and quickly snapped a photo.

It ended as quickly as it had started and I was startled to realize that although I felt like I had known the music my entire life I could no longer remember how it went. My mind was abuzz with what I'd seen; some sort of alien attack? I turned on the TV to watch the news and find out what it was, but every channel was just static. The radio was the same; only static and the phones are completely dead. Apart from going absolutely nuts both of the dogs seem fine. After thinking about it for a while I've locked all the doors and windows and we're going to stay in the house until we have further information about what has happened. If it was some sort of alien attack or strange bomb it will be safer in the house than on the streets. I wish I had a giegercounter to check that there's no radiation, but to be on the safe side I have filled all the baths with water, as well as all containers I can find. The electricity is still on and the water is still working so whatever it is doesn't seem to have knocked out the infrastructure.

What a party! Just got back from the End Of The World Party. The club was heaving! I met Steve and Sammi there. Steve had brought along his friend Nikki and a bunch of her mates and we spent the evening drinking and dancing until now when I have just staggered home. Feeling hopelessly pissed and need to get some sleep now! Can't help noticing that the world is still here despite how much I have drunk.

Before I start this, I just want to state that this is obviously all tongue-in-cheek fiction and shouldn't be taken seriously by anybody at all. All the photos used have been taken by me and with all characters in the story are members of my family and any semblance to anybody else, alive or dead, is merely incidental.
Dear Diary,
The End of the World is Nigh! Well that's if you believe the maniacs and crazies! I'd better explain; Today is the final day of the Mayan calendar started 5000 years ago. Obviously all the wierdo's have crawled out of the woodwork and there have been claims that we will die from everything ranging from floods, nuclear war and plague through to all life being obliterated by an asteroid hitting the earth. Mind you the human race seems to be pretty good at surviving impending doom by now - we made it through the Y2K thing and that American preacher, Harold Camping, has so far predicted the end of the world not once but twice!

Personally I'm planning in going out with style - out to a massive party with my friends later! Surprisingly it's called The End of the World Party! Sounds like a blast!

There are no more attachments available and there will not be another group buy for them - the seller has tried but can not source any more.
All that is left are 2 of the sanding /mitre table attachments.
£20 each inc UK delivery

I don't have final prices for the motors, inverters or adapter kits and there isn't a GB on the table just yet, we want to do a little more testing this week so please don't PM asking to be added to a list - there isn't one yet.

The attachment can be mounted vertically or horizontally using the adapter kit, you just position it where you want it, clamp it in place and use the adapter as a template to drill some holes.
David has his set in a vertical position, he used the sanding table as a work rest and has already modded his drive wheel to remove the sanding option.
I will be doing the same because i also want to use mine in the vertical position to run longer belts, (and I already have a disc sander).
The sanding table was designed to be used with the attachment in the horizontal position.
In the vertical position you can keep the sanding disc but you loose the table, it also restricts access to the contact wheel which is easier to use in the horizontal position.
In the horizontal position you will be getting sprayed with dust, in the vertical position you can position a magnet and water trap to collect it.

David spent a bit of time sorting the motor spec's, frame size (80), shaft size (19mm) and flange (B14), you also need foot mount so it's B34.

From testing so far a single phase 2 pole (2800rpm) motor would probably be better for general purpose metal work, (ie used to square or miter angle iron etc.).
A single phase 4 pole (1400rpm) is probably better suited to knife making where your grinding different materials, steel blades and then scale / sheath materials.
Three phase, 4 pole with this inverter you have 2 range settings, the manufacturer says it will run approx 140rpm up to 3360rpm.

Single speed you will need a motor and an adapter kit.
Variable speed you will need a motor, inverter and adapter kit

Ballpark figures -
Motor approx £80 - £160 (depending on spec and manufacturer)
Inverter - again depends on spec - the one David used is approx £125 delivered
Adapter kit - price needs to be finalised
You will also need to allow for some electrical bits and bobs, cable, plug top, switches, pot , box to but it all in etc. etc., (more needed with the inverter set up).

The adapter kit will consist of a steel plate that will attach to the motor flange.
You will decide what way you want to grind (vertical or horizontal) then you clamp the attachment to the adapter plate and drill some holes.
There will be a spacer and washer custom made along with a bolt and some shim.
Also there will be a couple of links that will attach to the plate for a work rest in the vertical position.

This kit is not Lego, it won't just press together but we will put together a tutorial at the time to walk everybody through using it.

The kit will be offered once and they will be be made to order.
The kits are available to anybody not just those who took part in this group buy so if you bought one on eBay or in the last group buy you can certainly get an adapter kit.

The electrics are more of a challenge and this where i have some concerns - a bench grinder comes prewired and all you have to do is plug it in.
A single speed motor will require some wiring, a variable speed set up will require more wiring and a bit of messing about to hook up and then set up the inverter.
