Sometime in the middle of the night the electricity failed, which means that the boiler isn't working, so I woke up in a pretty cold house. Everything seems strangely quiet, I guess I've been so used to some sort of background noise - either the radio playing or cars on the road outside or even the drone of plane engines in the distance that it almost seems unnatural not to hear these sounds. I've decided I'm going to leave the dogs at home and walk into the village and see if anybody has any idea what is going on.

The world has gone mad! I walked into the village earlier this morning, as I approached it there were all sorts of signs of violence, as if war had broken out. My first sign that something was terribly wrong was a crashed car in a ditch by the side of the road on the outskirts of the village. There was nobody near it that I could see but on closer investigation I found the terribly mutilated body of a woman in the field nearby! It looked as if she had been physically ripped apart!
There was nothing I could do for her as she was clearly dead, so I continued walking along the road. As I got close to the first houses a man opened an upstairs window and pointed a shotgun at me! We had a shouted conversation where he told me what has happened; apparently the strange lights in the sky the other night weren't aliens but were the Rapture! That's right, the Rapture, like in the bible. "The believers shall enter heaven and the dead shall rise again" sort of thing. Anyway, it seems like all the true believers have ascended to heaven, that's what those streaks of light were, their souls leaving their bodies. Their bodies, however, have remained behind. Bereft of intelligence, emotions and feelings they seek only to kill living people. Apparently they can be killed but because they don't feel pain they will just keep on trying to attack living people until their bodies are so badly damaged that they can no longer move! After being told all of this I was told to leave and with a shotgun pointed at me I wasn't going to argue!
I carefully entered the village, which seemed to be completely empty. If what I was told was true then everybody is either a zombie, or dead, or hiding. As I got near to the pub I became aware of the sound of breaking glass and a loud thumping from a nearby house. I carefully crept up behind a hedge and peered into the garden. Outside the house were about 20 people; men, women and children. They didn't make any sounds but hammered on the front door and smashed windows with their bare hands! I didn't wait to see what was happening but ran most of the way home. Fortunately I live outside the village down a small lane so I'm not likely to have any visitors.
I got home and locked the door before the shaking started. This seems like something out of a video game - "the zombies have risen now it's kill or be killed". Once the adrenaline wore off I felt absolutely shattered. I'm going to have to make some very serious decisions about what I'm going to do; I don't have enough food to hide here indefinitely. Right now though I need to have a rest, I'm absolutely shattered.

I came awake to hammering on the door, glass shattering and the dogs going mental! One look outside and I knew that the "zombies" must have followed me home! There were 20 or so people gathered around the front of the door, smashing their fists into it again and again, despite obvious bleeding and broken knuckles. Some of them had smashed the lounge windows but seemed confused about how to climb over the window sill to get into the house. I called the dogs and we fled out the back door, across the garden and through the hedge into the fields beyond!
We have been running for about an hour now and have put some distance between us and those creatures. We obviously can't go back and it is already pretty dark. I hate winter, if it was summer it would still be light. Even worse is that with the heavy cloud cover that we've been having lately it's going to be pitch black in 20 minutes. I'd better find some sort of shelter and sit out the night rather than go round blundering into who knows what in the dark. I just hope the dogs, Gizmo and Loki, will warn me if something comes this way. It's going to be a very cold night without proper shelter, a fire or sleeping bag, the one blessing is the unseasonably warm weather we have been having this winter.
