Given that I will only be using them very occasionally, and not with powertools, I think I won't need a professional set. (I have some bosch pro bits in bigger sizes for my power driver)

Here is something I made recently but can't for the life of me, think what they are called, hence the title.

It is used for all manner of things with the main interest on here, being the piece in the middle The tang was shouldered and forged out using this tool. The steel is 25mm x 6mm. All the forging shown below can be done over the edge of an anvil but this tool will ensure that the marks are even on both sides. The bar on the right is a piece of hollow tube that has been necked in.

All the tooling is made from 40 x 10mm mild steel bar. When it wears out I just cut another piece. You could be flash and make these out of carbon steel but they last long enough in mild with just a bit of dressing up now and again. The pair on the left have flat ends for shouldering tangs and the like. The middle pair have rounded ends and the ones on the right have pieces of 19mm bar welded on.

The tool has been made so that it comes apart easily so that tooling like the piece on the right (above ) can be changed. The other tools just drop in.
The base plate is 25mm steel and the two posts are 20 x 10mm set apart by about 42mm so that the tooling will move freely. The frames, front and back, are made from 25 x 6mm flat with short bars welded on to hold them together. The width between the 25mm bars is about 30mm so there are shoulders of 5mm on each side that the tooling runs in. As the two posts and the tooling are both 10mm thick the copper strips (about 1.5mm) are there to spread the shoulders apart.
The bottom tool rests on the 25mm base plate to take the shock.

The tool in action

While I was taking these photos I thought of another idea. I made a T shaped bottom tool, again out of 10mm, so now a shoulder can be forged in on one side only.

I put this tool together for forging in the shape by the bottom screw on some of my brackets, but as you can see it has many uses.

A few months ago I bought an old craftsman 2x42 grinder. It was good, but very fast (3450) and somewhat underpowered, the motor being '1HP max developed' I would estimate around 1/3 to 1/2 a HP.

So I was on the hunt for a larger 1725RPM motor when I found a 1.5hp Baldor on craigslist for $50! Unfortunately I discovered the rotation was incompatible, but I was delighted to find this was easily reverse.

The next problem was fitting wheel onto the new motor, as the arbor was larger, 5/8 versus 1/2". I found an adapter, described fitting a 5/8 shaft with a 1/2 threaded mandrel. When it arrived however I found the threaded part was much narrower than 1/2, so i had to resort to a shim to make the wheel fit. I was able to use the sleeve of an expanding bolt to make it fit perfectly. The wheel appears to rotate very close to it's axis, and there is no vibration, everything runs very smooth. The motor manual says the extension of shaft will cause increased wear to the bearings, but until I build a kmg clone it will have to do.

It is all mounted on a large piece of 1" MDF, and the spacer to raise the motor is a nice piece of poplar, both kindly donated by my friend who is a Cabinet Maker.

As I write, a Local machinist has allowed me to set it up at his shop for free!

Also, you can see my current WIP in the picture, a large Chukabocho or Chinese Slicer/Chef's (ie Thin cleaver) in 12C27. The old motor couldn't deal with trying to grind that sort of area, but with the new one I am finally making progress (only had the steel for two years).

Do I need a forge, or can I get away with something less if I just want to do heat treating shaped steel and not forging?

There were some pictures here recently of someone doing heat treating with a gas burner sandwiched between a couple of carved firebricks. Also, some of the posts about building forges suggested two sets of kit for doing forging and heat treating. One for each.

I think there are some holes in my knowledge about this (newbie), even though I've been reading a couple of books on knifemaking and reading loads on here and the web in general.

Can anyone set me straight on what I need for heat treating a cut out blade? Am I confusing two seperate subjects? (heat treating and forging).
