Hi all,

I have been have fun with a cheapo 1inch belt sander, and making some ok knives. Well my birthday is coming up and my missus asked if I wanted a better grinder. I said 'YES!' and promptly got her to buy me the AWEBDS610 150x1220 belt sander from axminster. It was £200 quid and got great reviews. However, I am now thinking I have made a stupid mistake as the belt is too wide....

What do you guys think? I still have my 1 inch grinder for curves I guess. Buying belts isn't too expensive so I'm not worried about that. I am more worried I will find the 150mm belt harder to use for grinding bevels/shaping knives - what is your experience? Can I modify it to make it easier?

Please help! :C

Thanks – Michael.
BTW, I will use regular cooking gas.

Thanks everyone for confirming my gut feeling that it wasn't a brilliant idea.

Workshop will be sticking with an outside build!

Wotcha folks.

The mrs has just made a suggestion and I'm not sure if it's brilliant or downright insane.

As you know, I'm planning on setting up a knifemaking workshop at home, having been badly bitten by the bug at JackJacks 2010.

The mrs just suggested "instead of the hassle of setting up a shed, insulating it and getting power run to it, why not set up indoors?"

I looked at her somewhat askance at that and she elaborated thusly:

The dining room is currently her sewing area with fabric storage drawers in the lounge.

If we got rid of the now unused dining table and moved her desk and computer downstairs into the end of the dining room I could move my computer and stuff into what is currently her study (the small third bedroom).

Then, my current study (the second bedroom) could become my workshop, as long as I kept the doorway clear so the door could be shut to keep noise and dust migration elsewhere to the house minimised.

I've measured up the room and I could get an Aly Minigrinder grinder, drill press and lathe in there and still have a small work area for assembly plus probably room for a milling machine later. Would replace the carpet with Lino.

I'm planning on a dust extraction system and wearing a mask when grinding anyway, so is her idea genius or madness?

It solves the problem of insulation, means everything would be in a more secure location and has no extra electrical installation needs like running per down to a shed would require.

What do folks reckon?

Are there any reasons why this shouldn't be done?

P.s. Forge would still be outdoors!

Hi guys.

The workshop project is starting to gather momentum now, even if the actual shed and power to it may be a little further off. Basically the Mrs has OK'd me storing up to 2 bench top power tools in the house so I can set up an ad-hoc outdoor workshop on the patio under our garden fabric gazebo thing in case of sudden showers.

One will be an Aly Mini Grinder.

The other a drill press.

Only problem is there's a huge choice of drill presses to pick from. Ranging from this sort of thing from Clas Ohlson and others like it:

http://www.clasohlson.co.uk/Product/...px?id=80299503
(350W, 5 Speeds)

Through this:

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/44021/...l#BVRRWidgetID

(500W motor, 9 speeds)

Right up to a beast like this

http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.ph...17/sn/DRA42640

(650W, 16 speeds)

Something tells me the 350W Clas Ohlson one (and it's ilk) are really only any good for woodworking.

The Draper one from DM tools is right at the top end of what I'd want to spend on a drill. I'd rather spend a little less on the drill to be honest.

Does anyone have the TITAN one from Screwfix? Is it any good?
Uses - drilling handle scales and drilling holes for pins in blades.

What other pillar drills would folks recommend me sub £150?

What a revelation; I could see the work before welding, and I could see details of the weld (puddle shape etc) as I welded. Previously I've had no decent success using a conventional welding mask.

Looking around, there is a big range of prices, from over £100 down to under £30. I won't be doing a lot of welding, and it will all be arc welding on 3-4mm steel. Apart from lack of adjustments, is there a real disadvantage to the cheaper masks?
