I have a sneeking suspicion however that it may not have the sufficient air pressure I need.

So thinking in advance I wondered if anyone converted a blower vac, they put out a lot of air so could maybe run fine off a dimmer switch thus eliminating some of the noise factor and varying the flow. I guess I could always go the hair dryer path but never really liked the look them stuck onto the side of the forge....

Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated..

I could feel another little necker coming on!

So, here it is!
It doesn't show up too well in the pix, but there's a sam brown stud set in the pommel to allow securing with the strap.
What do you think?

I'm involved in a bit of a project over on BCUK which has seen me pass on a bit of 2mm 01 to be engraved by a guy who is totally new to engraving. Turns out, he's bloody good! This has now stopped being a practice piece and is now being returned to me for heat treating, woodwork and clothing. I use a gas forge which works perfectly for all my other projects, but I've never tried cleaning engraved 01 before and think I might be in over my head.

The end result is going to be given away, or offered as a prize, or one of many other possible fates, as yet undecided!

Can I wrap it in steel foil to keep it clean? Should I find someone with an oven and get them to do it? Am I missing something?

Any other ideas?
HELP!!!!!

Hello there,

sorry for my long absence... loads of work to do and not much time left.

But now I am proud to announce that my book "Damascus Steel - Theory and Practice" has finally been released in english language.
It literally took years, but today I finally held it in my hands.

Go to the publisher's website for detailed info:
http://www.schifferbooks.com/newschi...=9780764342943

As the preview images provided there are really small, you can take a look at larger ones of the german version on my own website:
http://www.scorpiodesign.de/publikationen
The layout of the english version is almost the same, so they are ok to get an impression.

As it was received very well, it is probably worth a look for all people interested in damascus steel, be it on a theoretical base or for their own forging work.

Have fun!
Gunther

And just before welding the end cap on

After soaking in the gasforge for 1/2 an hour and the first pass under the airhammer

After a couple of additional heats I drew the piece out to App. 11 inches and decided to " ferry flip " the billet to get a better pattern

First some work on the bandsaw

And the pieces ready to be welded ( I decided to make a dryweld so I had to Tig weld all the way around each piece, which is really a pain in the .........;)

After welding ready for the forge

And after the first weld under the hammer

And the final result

Now the next step is finding some coresteel and make some knifeblades :)

I've been on the lookout for a cutlers hammer for a while and have toyed with the idea of buying one from one of the excellent makers here. But then I thought, "why not," and decided to 'modify' one of the many hammers that I have hanging about here that never gets used!

I've had this hammer, a Carolus Engineers Hammer of about 3lbs, just gathering dust. I've tried using the thing on several occasions but always thought it heavy and unbalanced, so, even if I make a proper pigs ear of it, I'm not going to lose anything by trying!

Here it is, all masked up and ready to go!

After a bit of 'fettling' with the trusty flapwheel.

The finished article.

It now weighs a bit over 2lbs, it feels balanced, which is something its never done, and, as far as I'm concerned, it works really well! I've tuned it in to match my anvil style, if I've got one, and now hits squarely and accurately.

I'm happy with this, and look forward to many happy sessions of steel bashing!

Hope you like it!
