This competition is mathematical, but a guess could be as close as a skilled mathematician who has done a lot of research. The competition is topical as we seen disgruntled private sector workers complain about the perceived benefits of working in the public sector.
I used to work in the private sector in an IT Support post where I was a member of a two man team responsible for the desktop and network support of ten offices of varying sizes. I resigned from the post in 2003.
I now work in the public sector in an IT Support post where I am a member of a two man team responsible for the desktop and network support of ten offices of varying sizes.
In my private sector post I worked 35 hour weeks and had 6 weeks holiday per year including bank holidays. In the public sector I work 37.5 hour weeks and get 5 weeks holiday per year including bank holidays.
Part of the private sector job agreement was to have a company car, but I had to pay for personal mileage. The car was seen as a taxable perk by the Revenue. All costs relating to running the car were met by my employer. In the public sector I can choose to lease a car for 3 years and claim back the work mileage or provide my own car. Due to my limited personal mileage it made financial sense to use my own car and claim back business mileage. Due to the cost of fuel in Shetland compared to the mainland, the cost of running a car is not covered by the claims. I claim around £120 per month, but all other vehicle related costs are met by myself.
Both sectors provided a contributory pension. The private sector made a contribution towards that. The public sector does not. As far as overtime payments are concerned, the private sector did not pay overtime or give time back in lieu. The public sector pays overtime only in the very rarest of cases, however overtime can be clawed back at mutually convenient times as time in lieu. I have worked overtime in the private sector, but have not worked overtime in the public sector as I have been able to claim the time back.
There were two other cases where extra earnings of a type could be earned in the private sector: gifts, no limit in the private sector, whereas there is a £6 in the public sector, and through money saving suggestions, 10% of the saving in the first two years in the private sector or £50 in the public sector. A colleague of mine was awarded a £7,000 bonus in the private sector. I am not sure if anyone has received the yearly £50 bonus in the public sector where I now work. I have excluded gifts and bonuses as they are not guaranteed sources of income.
What I have done is added together all of the figures of income and taken away all of the costs, running a car for work purposes for instance. I have tried to balance up the uneven items such as working hours, holidays and car costs by adding or subtracting sensible sums. What I have ended up with is two numbers, the first is for public sector working for a year(x) and the second is for private sector working for a year(y).
So the question is what is x/y expressed as a decimal to 5 decimal places?
I will release the answer (without the workings - for the sake of my privacy!) in 2 weeks. The winner is the person who guesses correctly or the nearest guess without going over.
The competition is open to UK members only.

FOR CLARITY, THESE ONLY FIT THE SUREFIRE L1, L2, A2, AND KROMA LIGHTS.
I'm in touch with Oregon Shooter (CPF etc) regarding buying one or two of these, they let your light tail stand (candle mode), and prevent it going off in your pocket, hence you have light when you want it;
Can we post any interest in the thread here, payment to me before dispatch in the UK, and UK postage will be just a first class stamp unless you want rec delivery (at the buyers expense).
I'll pay up front for the buy, assuming it will be a reasonable amount (ie no one orders 25 items!), as it'll be hard to prejudge customs/VAT.
Cost will be total cost/No. of buyers, plus appropriate postage.
I've emailed Jim back to say that I'm thinking, group buy, and hopefully he'll be back to me today.
The only fly in the ointment MAY be, post going up from the US with the increase in value, and customs duties/VAT being applied.
We will all be liable for this and share that cost between us fairly.
Many thanks, and sorry for the set out amble! It seems best to set out in black and white before any orders or monies start to move.
Interested? :)

Some people have kindly sent money as a gift or another non-commercial variation. The benefits of this are welcome but small; it's easier to send it as a payment for goods, because then if you forget to give your address, I don't need to spend time tracking you down, all over a matter of a few pence.

It’s simples, all you have to do is guess the weight of the tin box and it’s contents. Inside the box is something sharp, something round, something that glows and some paracord.
The nearest guess gets first dibs and can chose one item, then second, third, forth and fifth gets what’s left!
So five (small) items up form grabs.
Rules: You MUST have over 100 post count please. Only one guess per person. The only exception is if you have sold me something or purchased something off me, then you can guess twice .You must not edit your guess post.
All guesses in METRIC please. Please use the following format and quote or cut n paste from the previous post the list and add your guess under the last. So by the end I will have ONE long list with all the guesses on it.
This comp will run for a week or so, and then I will weigh the box in lab conditions. The scales used are calibrated with tracability to the national physics lab.

They are silver grey on black and are 8cm across.
The price is £2 per patch including post, packing and paypal fees, whether they are velcro backed or cloth backed.
I recently ran another patch group buy called the Mystery GB. Therefore there are plenty of patches that will be in the hands of many members and you can order as many as you like. If every bag and item of clothing needs one, it's OK to order 10 or more. The patches cost roughly a pound to make and post and profits will be returned to British Blades.
There are two lists; please don't include patches from the Mystery GB.

BBNAMEc QUANTITY

I'm willing to offer up a look at either of the two of mine, by concensus of opinion, for you lovely guys and gals to look at!
What you need to do is pop name down and select what type of malkoff I should passaround - the m60 (throwy) or m60 mce (floody)
For ease of understanding just put floody or throwy after your name!
Both are excellent units and will come via rmsd to you complete with 2 cr123 batteries to power it!
All I ask is that it returns to me with enough power for me to check it when it comes back!
Will be sent out in either 6p or z2 packaging!
Both bodies have seen use and are up to day to day use as you would carry your own torches, just don't abuse it!
Usual passaround rules apply!
6months or 500 posts!
Pm me name address etc!
Keep it for a week and pass onto next on list by RMSD!
The drop in with the most votes will be the one used on the passaround!
]]>Hatethatgiraffehttp://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92002£1 Charity Mystery GB - SELECT YOUR TYPEFri, 06 Nov 2009 08:45:38 GMTI am waiting for a very exciting delivery from the factory.
Here's a really funky idea from Danzo:
It's a blind GB.
You don't know what you're getting.
The mods know what it is but won't let on.
You may not speculate publically about what it is.
All I can promise is:
It's at cost.
It's good value for money.
Anyone may apply; even minors.
You won't get taxed for import duty.
They make lousy christmas presents.
They attract neither women nor mosquitos.
They will be sold here later in greater quantity for twice as much.
BB collects all profits estimated at £1 per item; i.e. I'm matching your £1 with £1.
I plan to ship together with the second GB, but you save money and secure a place.
Rules are:
There are upto 50 slots in the Mystery GB.
One item per slot; one slot per BB member. Sign up for yourself only.
No regrets. No risk. You will see what you're getting before you commit to pay.
You can add your Mystery GB onto the second 'proper' GB order, or cancel your order altogether.
Mystery GB will close when the 50th slot is filled, or when they are delivered to me from the factory which ever is soonest. That will probably be in one week or sooner.
Price is £1 per order, shipped to the UK, USA, Oz, etc. Payment by PP only. Payment after I have the items in my hands and payment clears before I ship.
BTW, In the cryptic spirit of the GB, there's a mystery side compo going on. Not everyone is eligible and the prize may not even be won on this GB but it very probably will. It may be won by someone totally unconnected to the GB so participation's unnecessary, but that's life and this GB isn't a lottery. Again you can't speculate on the competition nature, rules or prize, but it's brilliant and it's worth more than this entire GB put together.

It's a black anodised one complete with clip and due to the fact I lose it so damned often it's like new
So, How many separate items do I have in and on my EDC bag, not including the bag and shoulderstrap?
I should point out that if for instance I had a battery holder with four batteries in it, then I'll count it as 5. I'll also count added clips, but not batteries inside torches as they make the one item work if that makes sense.? In any event, I'll do the counting and be the final arbiter ;)
I'll let this run until Friday unless someone hits on it beforehand.
Please add and tidy the list as it develops....:D

Parang is aprox. 18'' total, blade is aprox 12'', blade steel is 8mm thick 01.
The PA is to have the knife for two weeks, use it, use it hard, but do NOT abuse it, then pass it on...
This means felling a tree = OK, trimming breeze blocks = NOT OK!
That means a minimum of 200 posts and a 6 month membership period, however Stuarts decission is final as its his knife donated for the PA. There is no cost, except the user pays for Royal Mail Special Delivery to the next participant. You take responsibility for it until you can prove it reaches the next person so always use insurance. Going to limit it to UK only and 10 slots.
One final thing, I am going to insist that all people taking part do a review of sorts. Even if its a para on how it felt in the hand and the edge held up that is OK, but I hope people can understand the importance to the maker of feedback when offering these free opportunities :)
