I'm currently on a business trip in a little town called Rognan, Norway. I was here a short while ago and bought my first blade and so my first knife was born. Anyway I wanted to make a another knife (you know how it goes!) using materials completely sourced in Norway. After chatting with a guy in the local hardware store, who sells the blades, he said he might be able to get hold of some antlers for me from a friend of his. Brilliant I thought but to be honest I wasn't really expecting him to come through. Oh yea of little faith, before the day is out he drops off a pair of moose antlers to my hotel.

Wanting to thank him personally I poppped back to the shop where he said he would also be getting some reindeer antlers for me too. I'll post some pictures of my good fortune when I get back.

Top guy and I have to say fairly typical of the people I've met here.

The handle is Stabilised Horse Chestnut Burl. Must admit it's an attractive wood, so may have to talk to Pikebite about getting some for myself!!

The handle is a different shape to any I've handled before but it's very comfortable in hand.

An offcut of the handle block is going back to the new owner to make a matching firesteel. Should look good together.

since it seems relatively impossible to get a XM-18 i got a Gerber [Hinderer -designed] Torch

which i find 'hands' very well, but still left me wanting more

so i ordered a Flashpoint Gen II off Rick, he said he had some in stock in another thread [err, on another forum] took about a week all told, cost me about a ton

its pretty much exactly the same size and shape as the Torch but massively thicker [4mm of CPM 154] with more of a 'scandi' grind solution at the tip [ie not spanto]

still a massively strong tip tho

neat kydex sheath, doesnt seem to be scratchy at all

Here is another higonokami. I actually have it since this summer but forgot to post it here.
Called "Okukuma Higo Kogatana", it is what I call a "country" higonokami of the rustic kind as opposed to "city" higonokamis that are smaller and more refined.
I know little of its maker, Hideto Kanmera, besides the fact that he is a blacksmith located in the region of Kumamoto in the Kyushu island, South West of the Japanese archipelago, in what in old times used to be the province of Higo, the original birthplace of the Higonokami knife.

It is quite a big folder with a 9 cm Yasuki blade (white paper steel n°2) and a 11 cm long stainless steel patinated handle.
Made in a workshop that produces mainly traditional tools, it is a rustic knife, simple and solid, without pretention.
It is faithful to the traditional higonokami spirit : a knife that is first a tool, cheap and efficient. This is not surprising as it is coming from the old Higo province.
Its shapes are indeed very classical: a blade cut with an angle at the point, a rectangular handle of folded steel that completely hides the blade when shut and an elliptical chikiri or lever.

The perfectly sized lever allows a one hand hand opening that may not be the smoothest but gives a good grip once the knife is open. The friction is well set for a knife of that size, not too fluid but not too hard either. This way, you will not be afraid that the blade shuts down on your fingers while using it.
It is conceived as an utilitarian and reliable cutting tool, minimalist, without decorations of any kind. The handle doesn't even try to look pretty, all what counts is the blade.

I love the Zen like purety of the blade with its precise linear grind and the different surface treatments of the steel as you go from the spine to the edge: first raw and brut de forge, then satin finished on the sides and finally mirror polished.
At the thickest the blade measures 3,5 mm.
The master's signature in japanese kanjis, Hideto Kanmera, is engraved in the steel.
It was not easy to get it. I located it a while ago but they were not answering my mails in english. So I finally used plan B and bought it through a site that helps foreigners shop in Japan. For a 20% fee they do all the inquiries, pay with a japanese bank and take care of the shipping. Didn't cost that much as the knife's price is only around 60 euros.
A good thing about collecting higos is that you can find interesting custom knives at quite decent prices ;)

After being given this link by another member I set about designing my own take on the "Alaskan Swiss Army Knife".

1/8th 01 with a shallow convex grind (which I'm really happy with), 4mm brass pins and American Black Walnut scales (again! I have loads of the stuff.)

As before there are still some tooling marks but I've learned a lot from this blade so the next should be much better.

I've figured out that there is more than one way to hold it, depending on the task at hand, e.g.-

Normal use-

Skinning and fine control-

Chopping the obligatory herbs-

I'm sure there are more. Answers on a postcard and thanks for looking.:)
