As I had issues with the longevity of my Chippewa boots I purchased in September (eyelets were snapping off, seams came unstichched etc) and the replacement pair was both the wrong size (it felt a half size large but was marked the same) and was apparently used I just took a refund and bought these.

Just a note, I reversed the kittle (black leather thing under the laces) after taking these pictures so it now matches the rest of the boot.
They are unlined and uninsulated as I found two things this year about cold weather boots.
1. I am better off in a pack boot below 20 F if I am inactive and below 10 F if I am active.
2. Gore tex and the like are over rated. I found my feet seem to get damp constantly and with an unlined boot I seem to keep them dryer and more comfortable. If it is pouring rain or I am in ankle deep mud its time for a muck boot, so a water resistant boot really does it.

I wished I learned these lessons sooner as it would have saved me a lot of trouble. I was out in a drizzle for a few hours a couple days ago (before properly greasing these mind you) and my feet stayed dry. Previously I had been working on a construction type environment and not timber cruising so I had different needs.

Well, on the boots, they are stiff as boards and weigh more than a hiking boot. They are breaking in slowly but surely (I have only had them for a week) and they have great arch support. The company themselves quoted me an 8-10 week build time and they were delivered in 6 (they are a semi custom build due to the size). I would say they were worth the price tag ($329 USD) if they break in and actually flex and hold together like they should.

They are build with the Vibram 100F sole which is the fire resistant sole because they are marketed to wildland fire fighters and meet most of the standards for them (minimum leather thickness, height and sole) but I do not know if they are NFPA approved (the standard for wildland fire fighting equipment, because they do not have Kevlar stitching as far as I know). As far as I can tell they are pretty comfortable but stiff and they will have a LONG break in period. They still don't flex well, but they have great traction. The 100F sole is markedly stiffer than the other Vibram soles which contributes to how long they take to break in.

They are a tight fitting boot and are hard to get on and off but once I am in my toes have plenty of room and don't cut off circulation. The heel is nice and is great for going up hill and through the mud and I like the two part sole so I can replace the heel cap before the entire sole (heel wears out first). I shall update this as I wear them more.

Full title: 5.11 Tactical (RUSH) MOAB 6 and 10 Sling-bags (MOLLE/PALS compatible) and Tier System

Following on from my review of 5.11 Tactical's RUSH 12 and 24 backpacks, this time I am taking a detailed look at the two 'RUSH' MOAB 6 and MOAB 10 sling-style bags which are perfect partners to the RUSH backpacks using the 5.11 Tactical ‘Tier System’.

Although great partners to the RUSH backpacks, the sling-style MOAB (Mobile Operations Attachment Bag) 6 and 10 work fantastically well as stand-alone bags giving the user a variety of flexible carry options. Due to their single strap design, the ambidextrous MOAB 6 and 10 can be worn to the front, keeping everything in view, or to the back and easily spun around to make them easy to work out of, or provide quick access to the concealed carry pocket.

Considering the MOABs single strap design, and that for heavy load carrying you will want a backpack, the two MOAB bags have been sized give you a choice of a smaller pack, the MOAB 6, to carry the every-day essentials, or a larger pack, the MOAB 10, which can cope with the daily commute or day trip.

Of course the expandability afforded by the integrated PALS system makes these sling-packs all the more versatile.

For more information on PALS / MOLLE, see the RUSH 12 and 24 review on EDC Forums or British Blades.

Although it does not appear to be specified by 5.11 for the MOAB bags, as they are part of the RUSH series, the model suffix, 6 or 10, may be intended to indicate the number of hours you are carrying provisions for. So the MOAB 6 should carry the items you need for a 6 hour outing, and the MOAB 10 covering your needs for 10 hours out and about. These seem reasonable guidelines, especially considering the expandability of the packs and options to add MOLLE/PALS pouches and tie on other gear.
