How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
Curious how many and what type.
For arguments sake lets say you have to move camp somewhat often so you cant bring everything as weight and portability is an issue.

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
I would then limit myself to 2 knives ( assuming that I have something in my kit for heavy work such as an axe ). One would be a nessmuk or bushcraft style knife with between 4" & 5" blade length of 1/8" high carbon steel. This could be used for camp chores and butchering game. The other would be a drop point style with a 3" blade for finer work.
In a survival situation, i.e, apocolypse
, I would have stashes strategically placed so I could stay on the move in an area I have knowledge of, but my enemy may not, with backup supplies giving me a strategic advantage.

You have to be frank, here. You will become depressed, listless and bored in Teotwawkiland. Blades will be for cheering youself up a bit. So, by all means a couple of uilitarian things for cleaning your nails and turning squirrels inside out. But really, you need to be thinking in a tripartite manner. Here's an easy to remember acronym - C.S.L

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
A small axe blade, a Bushtool and a saw blade. Can't see having a use for anything else, unless it would be a different part of the world we are talking about.
I'd also carry a hone to keep it all working properly. If portability was a crucial issue, I'd leave the handles off the axe and the saw.

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
I'd take 3 with the understanding that I have an axe and saw, Idealy a folding saw with a few sapre blades.
I'm looking at it from the point of view or what I have now, so: I'd have my Enzo Trapper O1 as my main knife (it is now so why change what I already know), my Enzo Birk as in the two months or so I've had it for it's been the perfect folding kinfe and lastly I think I'd go for my stainless Mora Clipper I'd select my stainless as I'd use it for food prep and I've had a carbon clipper go bad in the kitchen before, you could taste the blade on the food you were cutting so I got a stainless an have never looked back.
I wouldn't take a big chopper unless I didn't have an axe or hatchet, then I'd replace the Mora and use the folder for food perp. I'd probably take my Ontario RTAK II as for a knife it's a great chopper.I wonder what would happen if tentacles were involved…

Wilderness wilderness... I'd take an axe or machete (depending on the wilderness), Leuku length light chopper and a folder for utility and backup.
Nessmuk got it about right I think

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
Depends what you call long term I guess. Mobile or static?
Medium sized SAK
Multi tool with pliers.
Small single blade folder
Puukko/Mora etc.
Leuku
Hatchet/golok/e-nep (environment depending)
Bow saw blades - some for greenwood some seasoned.
3-3.5lb double or single bit felling axe head *
*If we are talking static more than a month then I'd want a big axe head with me.

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
I went on a 2 week winter skills survival course a few years ago and I took one 4mm D2 scandi bushy , 3mm 01 scandi bushy ,3mm D2 convex bushy, griptillian, wave, bow saw and a GB scand forest axe. looking back on it 3 bushys were a bit much the 01 scandi bushy would have been fine and a nice cold steel sanmai trailmaster!

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?
I would have to take my leatherman wave, as i am so used to using it and know what it is capable of doing (and not doing).
A medium sized fixed blade and an axe, to do what i cant make the wave do.
