Everything I could find. Knives also come in handy for swaps.

30"-36"Bow saw and spare blades(or just blades, make a bucksaw frame), pocket folding saw, GB Scandanavian forest axe. 8 1/2"-10 1/2" bowie. 3 or 4mm thick bushy, thin flat grind necker, leatherman and enough sharpening gear to keep them all sharp for a very very long time.

If it was only one blade it would be this I made-- http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20...51-d34a9qc.jpg

If I had a choice, it would be- 1. A hatchet or small forest axe.
    2. The knife mentioned above.
    3. A Mora Clipper, carbon steel

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?

I've been on relatively few long(ish) treks (say from 14-day to 1month) and, though one was a genuine wilderness I'm sure this isn't what the OP meant by "long term" or "survival". However, in each of case, I was predominantly o/n camping before moving on and weight was always a crucial issue. I carried 3 knives with me, a camp/bushcraft style fixed blade (various styles over the trips but 4-5" blade); a 3" blade locking folder and a SAK. I used the SAK and the fixed blade a lot but I don't think I ever used the locking-folder!

If I was to plan for similar treks now (and having just joined this forum, my interest has already been re-kindled somewhat) I'd probably add a folding saw to the back-pack and the SAK may be swaped-out for my old but very useful leatherman tool. I'd have to ponder on whether I'd bother with the locking folder or a shorter fixed blade.

Just been thinking about this myself, so yesterday i went out taking only my cegga axe. Used it for every thing, chopped wood instead of sawing to size, used it to shave kindling etc..found it very versatile. However one day is a bit different to long term..

Why not revive an old, but good thread?

As you have revived a 2 year old thread, then maybe you can stipulate - take in what? A rucksack or a truck?

Re: How many blades would you take for long term wilderness survival?

Having recently being involved in reviewing an excursion into the NZ wilds...

I would take at least two fixed blade knives, and a small hatchet, or one of my kukhris...

One knife on my person at all times, and the rest in a pack or belt kit...

This may sound confusing, but the aforementioned edgeware is all in ADDITION to a SAK tied to a cord and placed in a short or trouser pocket...

The weather here can change in less than 30 minutes, and drop 15° C at the same time, and the ability to make a shelter quickly, requires a chopper sort of blade...

I some time soon hope to do a test run on a friend's property where lots of trees reside, and see how long it takes to make a shelter first using a kukhri, and then an axe of sorts...

So...three knives and a chopper of sorts...

Ever seen any of the Babycart movies?

I'd be like that, but with no room for the baby.
