    How big is 10 acres?

How big is 10 acres in simple terms? How long would each side of a 10 acre square be? How many trees would be in 10 acres, mature oak, just average forest density?

I know that forests are all different, but ball park figures. Am I talking about a few hundred trees or needing to employ Ents?

I've always thought (Can't remember who told me!) That an acre is a roughly a full sized football pitch, I'm guessing this is where I find out I've been misinformed

    1 acre = 4046 square meters
    10 acres = 40460 square meters
    = a square roughly 200m per side

With fully mature oak spread around 15-20m (probably less if densely planted/ not managed), 40460/175 = 230 trees 40460/315 = 128 trees.

Depends on soils, tree management etc though.

Is this an archaeology related question? The size and number of timber trees per acre has changed dramatically over the years. In medieval times timber was a by product of woodland which was primarily for producing fuel. Timber trees were generally very small felled at 6-12" diameter to reduce the amount of processing needed before powered rip saws. Oliver Rackham has studied it more than most and gives typical numbers of trees per acre in "trees and woodland in the british landscape" He did a good talk about medieval woodland at the Carpenters Fellowship last weekend using the 800 year old barn we were in to demonstrate what woodland looked like in 1200ad. Blog about it here . He calculated that the huge barn was built from 600 timbers from 480 small oaks which if taken from a 10 acre woodland would take 50 years to produce the same again.

    Spot on, an acre is 220y x 22 y, so 10 would be 220 x 220y

    220y is about 201m

If you are planting for timber harvesting purposes you plant eight feet apart in both directions and stagger the rows by four feet. As they mature you thin the ones that don't die out naturally. This planting method causes them to compete for light as they get older so they don't spread, they grow straight up quickly. This results in a better quality of wood with fewer knots.

Ten acres makes for a good hobby or sustenance farm.

Re: How big is 10 acres?

Thanks for the information Gents. I already looked at Wiki and did the basic research, but just wanted my Maths checking really. I am also having a problem getting a mental image of how much woodland is on the ground as opposed to on a map or Google Earth.
It isn't for archaeology though. I want to buy a piece of woodland for recreation, for my kids to know about something beyond town and to have the fallback plan of escaping this increasingly power hungry set of Toffs and Berks who take it in turns to "run" the country.
I'm not planning Wako, but I may just fade away from society, if I'm lucky. Or at least get away at the weekends. It just costs so much.......

It's a great dream - one I share, though for myself, not for kids. Woodland isn't that expensive (well not compared to a new BMW), but the thing is what kind of wood and where it is. Ten acres is a good size, but if it's a 10 acre island in the middle of a motorway intersection, then the point of it is lost. If the location is good, 10 acres would be enough, but if the location is not so good, you might need 100 acres to get the same result. It's probably easier and cheaper just to move somewhere rural that is close to a wood.

Re: How big is 10 acres?

ive just been given 10 acres buy my parents, and will be building a house on it shortly.im very happy, but you have to be careful.its not quite enough land to make a living off,but still takes a lot of work to maintain so you can be trapped into working on it a hell of a lot, but still being tied to a full time job elsewhere to maintain it.we talked about it indepth and recon the best way is to buy a place surrounded buy woodland etc, then you can enjoy it but dont have to spend all your time maintaining it.i may be a bit off mind you cause mines all grass.
    cheers, casey
