Re: Formula to work out grinding angle for blade or bevel
i dont think useing a jig makes it any less hand made the same as useing a grinder , drill press , lathe , buffing machine or etcher . its just another tool in some ones tool box to aid the process along . to be fully hand made you would have to start by smelting your own steel like a few folks on here have done

Re: Formula to work out grinding angle for blade or bevel
Relly Ive just used the same bit of 2" angle and a pair of mole grips for all blades flat and Scandi and now Hollow grind (minor alteration for hollow mainly cos i cant drop the Table on my grinder) done a few hundred now over the last couple of years all shapes
would still like to learn Free hand as it does have some advantages and uses

Re: Formula to work out grinding angle for blade or bevel
Not what I'm saying, calculating angles as per OP would only be handy when using a jig with precisely adjustable angles or using CAD driven CNC machining. So I voted "no" since it would not help me. Because I don't use a precision jig or CNC machine there will be measurable inconsistency in my grinding, like I can see on an old Puma White Hunter I have (pre Puma's switch to CNC'ing). This I feel is excuseable because it's 'handmade', same as the slight irregularity in a maker's stamp is excusable unless he uses a laser engraver.
I cannot get a jig around the curves of a Bowie or a "Bearclaw's" recurve grind so I decided it would take me less time to learn to grind freehand than it would take me to figure out a jig system that'll allow me the same freedom at the same speed.
I envy the guys who do forging and even more so the guys that make their own steel and that's not because it looks like hi-tec metallurgical CNC'd knives.
