    Cheers

And, just a thought......you could do a group buy of some good stuff in quantities, does not have to be vast quantities. Not sure what the most used / most popular would be, but these guys may provide a way of buying if you can get others to share http://www.gluelines.co.uk/index.html

How long has epoxy been about?
I'm sure people have been making knives for much longer.
Did they use something else, rely on pins and fit or what?

    Pine resin, cutlers resin...

Any number of narural & synthetic polymers have been used Kev.

take any old, Sheffield, stag handled knife & stick it inna oven at 200deg c. & it'll pull apart like Pritt stick onna warm afternoon (& you can take a nasty cut from th' cooled resin)

Cheers Col. i thought that there would have been alternative adhesives, but I do wonder whether because of the invention of Devcon and the rest less attention is now paid to fit and finish of the pins, scales and blade.

I must admit that my first line of defense is the 'fit and pins', I've got an unhealthy addiction to getting everything perfectly flat so everything mates up spot on.
I suppose the Epoxy is somewhat of a safety net plus with the added benifit of stopping moisture getting underneath the scales and causing al sorts of problems!

Thanks for the info guys, really helpful stuff!

I have a fixed blade knife (German) a very substantial knife too.........from one side of the handle, one of the 'pins' dropped out.........purely aesthetic, they are only 4mm deep into the handle each side. Tush.

The reliance on adhesives and fillers is paramount these days...........just take a look at cars, aviation and the construction industry, the latter in particular........they even call some stuff 'No Nails'

Lol I know what you mean, I work as a Stonemason and we use stuff to glue stone to stone, a kind of resin bond. It says 'vertical' on the tin but I wouldn't fancy walking underneath anything just held up by that alone!!

I seem to remember that, some time ago, there was a very comprehensive thread on adhesives on the Brights and Gadgets sub-forum. I'm unable to direct you to it, but I found it very informative, and might well be worth digging out.

Yep. Advances in adhesives within the aviation and space-travel industry have helped enormously........I have a glass table top that is only stuck to the top of two chrome legs. Now, if anyone knows what kind of aviation adhesive that is..........!?

Been using Zap CA. Setting times and viscosity vary, the long set is a few minutes. I use another one called Slip Fit for the pins as it allows for some repositioning. I got a selection from Ebay to try out.
