Handmade leather wallet?
Hey there leatherworkers

My brother just told me he's looking for a decent leather wallet. He's going up to London to look in some fancy shops, and no doubt he'll spend a ton on something with someone's name on it.
So, does anyone know anyone who makes leather wallets? What sort of price are we talking about?
Oh, and while I'm here, what about handmade boots? Do actual shoemakers still exist?
Cheers!

*Don't* get me started on boots!!!
I've had no end of difficulty finding lasts in one-offs - and even if you do find a last, it has to be right for a) your foot and b) the style of boot.
There are a couple of cordwainers still around - http://www.fashion.arts.ac.uk/5058.htm teach it, and there's http://www.cordwainers.org/ & http://www.thehcc.org/
As for wallets, I've made a couple, I'm just less enthusiastic about working with thinner leathers.Peter

Re: Handmade leather wallet?
That would be lovely, if you don't have to go out of your way. I'm not sure my bro is discerning enough to choose handmade over harrods, but I'd like to try and steer him in the right direction!

If you are able to find out about them and prices etc; then I would be interested in one for my father too.

Re: Handmade leather wallet?

I heard a funny story once, about a crazy French hunting guide in the mountains. It was a long, winding story, but it ended with the guide proudly presenting his old tobacco pouch to an English guest who'd done him some service. The Englishman was very pleased, and thanked the guide effusively. The guide said it was nothing; to make another, he only had to find another cat!

Re: Handmade leather wallet?
I'd like to know if you have seen a wallet like this?
It's been made with rawhide, and hand laced whith tientos (a thin thread of leather)

Interesting... So is the body of the sheath rawhide? How has it been treated to get it looking like that?

Re: Handmade leather wallet?
That's a lovely piece of work - you made that yourself I take it? Based on what you did to that knife handle in your other thread, I'm pretty sure you must be able to do anything

I have to say it's lovely to see something a little different to the standard black leather wallets that most people have. Admittedly mine is also black leather but then again, I only use it to store mothballs
