I tend to use the "Classic" retractable metal knife actually made by Stanley. I haven't done a comparison but they always seem to work and some cheaper ones have broken or otherwise annoyed me.

    This one.

fixed bladed ones are nice that open easy to replace the blade quickly. I tend to stay way and just use a sharp cheap knife

One of the carpet fitters on here should have the answer - if anyone'll need a good Stanley knife, it'll be them I'd guess.......

Up to a few weeks ago I would say the simple screw together stanley! The sliders seize up easily, But a few weeks ago I was browsing round maplins like you do when i came across a ROLSON ! (i know usually rubbish) Folding craft knife, It is absolutely superb Its basicly a good lock knife with a stanley blade in that clicks into place using a small button, Takes seconds to replace/turn blade, and press lock back and shut drops in pocket no probs, Ive given it loads of stick so far and not a wimper, I believe kershaw or somebody did one similar At COSTCO a while back but you had to buy in pairs, Otherwise a company called IRWIN do a good knife,

I had a Stanley branded retractable one, think it has three open position and obviously closed. Used it a lot but have seemingly lost it, quite disappointed about it actually. Been using a normal Stanley branded one, always open and ready. Its a simple little thing but it gets a lot of use, can cut things up on the ground/concrete without ever worrying about it

Agree with Earthman Stanley fat Max XL is one of the best. Being a flooring guy I can't recommend a Sweeney Todd (Iknow) by Delphin enough, about £15, operates like the FatMax, bullet proof. You can buy them most places. I have 2 or 3 so if you would like one I am more than happy to dig one out and pop it in the post, let me know.

Gerber make a good compact one, although you need to unscrew the blade to replace it.

I have been a carpet fitter all my working life (21 years this year) and I use plain dark grey stanley knives with a yellow roller on the back, I use a plain stanley blade in one and a hook in the other if I rotate the blade use they last about 3 years, I dont like the Dolphin knives most carpet fitters use as they are really bulky and retractable knives are dangerous.
