Just out of curiosity, has anyone worn out one of these strops yet? I use mine day in day out, and the leather seems to have gone a bit 'flat'. This isn't causing any issues at all, as far as I'm concerned it is working as good as new. Was just wondering as to how long these things will actually last when they see a lot of use?

If the leather is smoothed as a result of it being clogged with 'used' paste, then give it a good scrape with something like a Stanley blade to freshen it up.
I reckon to wear out maybe 2 or 3 strops a year ... but as you might imagine, mine get a LOT of use I reckon that Mr Average Joe can expect to get at least 5 years out of one, even if he cleans it as aggressively as I do.
If it's not sharp, it's just a piece of metal.

Cheers At the moment I use an old credit card. Was a bit dubious about using anything else as I didn't want to damage the leather. I might see about getting a spare set of strops soon then, I wouldn't want to get 5 years down the line and be stuck with blunt knives

Hi longstrider, would you make a rounded one for stropping spoon and crook knifes?

I'm in the middle of making the latest batch of strops at the moment. They should be done next week.

As for round versions .. I'll see what I can do with any off-cuts of the hide. If that doesn't pan out, I have some other very similar hide that I should be able to make a few round versions with. What sort of diameter would you want if I were to make them on dowel ?

Thanks for getting back to me

Asked a wood carver about diameter and he thinks a 1/2" dowel plus the leather would be best.

I've used mine a lot over the last few days, and the fluffiness of the leather had come away with use and application of smurf poo is that normal? And I've had to warm the smurf poo is that normal too? If so which is the best way to warm it? I fear il burn it with a lighter
