Anyone know...
...what steel, old steels are made from?
I guess they're good, cos they're pretty hard, but does anyone know specifics? Any pounders had a go yet? My mum has a secondhand shop (useful for all sorts of things, not least, as many steels as I can reasonably expect to use in about fifty lifetimes
) sooooo supply's no problemo, jus' wondered?

Gasoline rainbows? Sounds like the Mission...
No idea what your steel is Colin - get it to critical, quench it in water and hit it hard with a hammer.Peter

Re: Anyone know...
I imagine you mean a butcher's steel, and not a sparking steel...
I've had a look at mine, they're just marked "cast steel" or "warranted cast steel", which probably (judging from the age) means water hardening crucible steel...
The analysis is probably very similar to the shear steel that Jon mentioned.
I'll see of I can find out more for you.
