    Year long bowie project done!

Pretty basic bowie I made for a chap in the US. Seven inch O-1 blade, 3/16th thick, flat grind. 416SS guard and mortised walnut burl handle with oil finish.

Best bit was the walnut, got it as an off cut from some guys who make really high end shotguns. Its taken long enough though, got the wood about this time last year!

Thanks everyone. This was my first commission. Sadly the chap in the US wanted something to look at rather than use, hence this being pretty rather than functional.

It was only after I had finished swearing about heat treating 7" blades in one-brick-forges that it hit me I could have made the blade from mild steel

If anyone thinks of using walnut on a bowie, a word of caution. It is really light wood! Getting the right ballance on the longer blade can be a bit harder if you want the weight to be back in the hand.

Re: Year long bowie project done!

Hi Kevin. Is it Arkansas in style? I can't say that I knowingly picked anything in particular, just bits of other knives that I liked the look of.

Nearly all done with files still hehe. I have borrowed a B&D Power File and used that with a 120 belt to start the sanding job pre-HT, and to rough sharpen post-HT. That little thing beats the hell out of 5 hours on the water stone! All the main work was still done with files though.

Since you all seem to aprove of the walnut, thought I would post another from the same batch. I cheated on this though, its a Chuck Hawes 1095/203E (iirc) blade that I have reworked a little and refinished. No idea what its for, but its pretty.
