Re: First attempt to a skandi

The fun continues - during waiting the heat treatment of the next scandi blade; after all I deside to try to make a knife after so much filework. Will see what will happen...

The hardening was done - side by side here they are - the "hunter" and the scandi-try! And now is time to work; step first - to search for that time

I've struggle with the color plan - my favorites are those with the wych elm and the maple. Which is yours? Thanks for yours suggestions!

Looks very clean and tidy work, liking the lines and the progress so far. How long are the handle & blade?

Thanks. They are my favorites too. But a political decision was taken at the last moment for a change - a problem occur with the buffalo horn; so the stag antler came to rescue

Thanks. You should see the kitchen yesterday - not so clean and tidy The dimensions are: blade - 90 mm, the handle - 121,8 mm (may be a little bit longer, but is handy - at least for now).

Finaly - finished I had hurt myself a little, so I decide to "accelerate" the finish operations - after some experiments with dyes and acid (insufficient) I left the handle just with oils/waxes combinations. You have the word now:

Re: First attempt to a scandi

Nice work yet again. I have read the topic from the first post again, and I am truly liking your tidiness, as someone said. Amazing. And I have a tip of my own for you. You said that you're troubling with sanding leather near the bolster. I put just a drop of cyanoacrylate on it and it turns to plastic. Good thing is, That it won't penetrate deep if you breath-harden it (exhaling on it will instantly harden the small amount). Hope it helps!

P.s. what wood is that awl handle made of? I love it

Re: First attempt to a skandi

Thanks, mates. But I think it is too high valuated
OldSchool, this is exactly the approach I,ve used The CA works well, but for a wile. And that particular piece of leather reacts this way with the CA and the oils, creating such kind of nasty paste on metal spacers and bolsters. On the newest knife (oh, how I wish to call it a scandy finaly) the leather is much thinner and works well with the CA, but there was another surprise: it shrinks during hot oil/wax treatment - so far for the used glue A-a-and the CA comes to save the day again
The wood, I belive, is box elder (Acer negundo).
