Re: First attempt to a skandi
So far with the progress: the walnut is pretty hard and I lost my hands somewhere in the shavings

you've been busy! I really enjoyed that mate! your work keeps getting better and better so keep it up!
The mora 2000 blade is pretty cool, I'd love one in a custome handle!

Re: First attempt to a skandi
Mr Barrel I love your work. Especially the cross grain wood bolsters. Do you have any tips in preserving the wood from breaking/ cracking?

Re: First attempt to a skandi
Thanks a lot, Samson

There is no special tips - just drilling the perfectly dried boxbwood in cross-direction (just like the rays in the very wood)
And for the next there will be diferent bolster - bronze or bufalo horn... will see. For now - only filework up to the final form:

Re: First attempt to a skandi
Perhaps it is the choice of the wood. I've tried beec and oak, both tend to split really nicely. Do you, sir, go freehand filin' or is there a jig or two behind the precise work?

Re: First attempt to a skandi
Just a few pics of the almost finished MORA. It's a little more comfy in the hand, but without any work it is not sure if the grip is so good. Will see... Now you can see her

...all the critics are welcome, thank you

Re: First attempt to a skandi
I couldn't make knifes, good like music, therefore I try to embed the music in them
Grandpa's broken guitar will be happy outside of the fireplace. Not sure about the wood - may be ash, but it is good to work with it.

Re: First attempt to a skandi
It seems that a piece of leather, wood, some threat and needles, wax and awl are not enough to make a good sheath - just good anough to wear it. So - still many more to learn...

Re: First attempt to a skandi
I think you have done a very good job with that sheath, excellent for a working sheath and a lot better than my first knife and sheath. This was made from a kit and after making it I did think that there must be a better way of making one

I was very lucky to have 'hands on tuition' from two very skilled Norwegian knife makers. They taught me far more than I could have achieved working on my own.
Regards John.

Re: First attempt to a skandi
Thanks woodnut. I hope one day to have the skill to make knives at least 50% good as yours
I have a friend, who is an exceptional blacksmith and knifemaker, but he works and lives far away from Varna and I rarely see him to have his precious advices and most important - his critics. Therefore I post my funny works here, where you can see and comment them
So - an application for a tip of an deer horn (the other part goes for the damascus blade. One day...). I do not want to throw it, so I'll use it with a little stainless steel

And the instruments are only handtools, you may see them in the posts; some of them was made for my knifemaking imitation
