    Hitler Youth knife?

    Hello guys

This knife was given to me by my late grandad, now he told me that it was a hitler youth knife. Im pretty sure it's not as having done a search on them, it seems that the hitler youth knife had a swastika on the handle. Can anyone throw some light on this knife?

    Here are some pics

Here is says Whitby Solingen German on the blade

Also on the little white diamond on the handle there is a decoration thats looks just like this engraved on it

I tried to get a picture but i didnt come out.

Any help and comments would be brilliant

    cheers

    Liam

looks very much like the hitler youth knife but sanitised by putting a fleur de lis where the nasty badge normally goes. interesting that it says whitby so perhaps an import to the uk?

There were a lot of them sold after the war as scout knives (the symbol is the scout badge), I remember seeing loads of them in the eighties.

    Re: Hitler Youth knife?

I'd guess it's a rather nasty combination of two knives, marked to confuse and convince. That blade does not look as if was originally with that handle, the spine sits too high against the line of the handle.

The handle stamp is so bizarre that it's almost believable.

But whatever it is, it isn't a Hitler Youth knife.

So did Whitby have pseudo Nazi knives made in Solingen and stamped as such?

    It's a fascinating topic, and I'm intrigued.

The fact that the handle is stamped "Germany" rather than "Deutschland" would set my own alarm bells ringing. At the very most its a "bitsa", but it certainly isn't genuine.

Some great replies gents, thank you.

Ropeman - cant belive i didnt suss that the decoration was infact a scout badge, top work

So are we of the assumption that the blade was infact put onto the handle at a slightly later date?

Does anyone know then Where this knife was made? England or Germany?

    Re: Hitler Youth knife?

Those knives were made in Germany by the hundred of thousands before the Nazi regime and after. Those blades have been handled as Nazi fakes, boyscout knives, blank regular handled knives and every other configuration you can imagine. There are very good ones and very bad ones.

    Re: Hitler Youth knife?

There were rather a lot of suddenly unsaleable HY knives left in factories at the end of the war (a projected rise in membership having failed to materialise post 1945) They were simply bought up in very large numbers and used as scout knives.

The spine is always higher than the back of the handle, it must be a feature.

See this original, losing side, example:

And the handle close-up about 3/4 of the way don this page:

Excellent stuff mate, but why the odd spine? It looks wrong but if it was standard then someone somewhere decided on it, I wonder why?

    Re: Hitler Youth knife?

You are dealing with an organisation that thought starting a war with Stalin was a good plan, who knows what design criteria they impose on something as tangential as a knife for kids.

The blade may have been originally designed with an adult sized handle in mind but the smaller handle for the jugenden and the same orientation of the scales will move the spine up, relatively.
