Best Khukri
I am feeling the itch to own a and use a khukri. I handled one about 20 years ago, but since then nothing
Their worth seems undeniable. Converts to them are so certain of their capacities.
I could do with some help choosing the right one, though. And, can't really tell on from another. There are size and shape differences. Different military and other issues. And the websites confuse the crap out of me
As a campknife is there one that shines above all the rest?
All help regarding uses, preferred shapes and lengths, weights, steels, issues, manufacturers, suppliers etc - everything in fact - will be most gratefully welcomed

Re: Best Kukhri
I prefer the larger ones 18" which as i have big western hands fits reasonably comfortably
they also benefit from proper sharpening if they have had a final small bevel put on this needs to be removed and a large convex to replace it.
heres mine for the last 15 ish yrs (replaced a 12" version that i used the previous 10yrs) with a few other choppers

Frank Mclaury: You're next on my list, Holliday. You better get used to seeing my face, 'cause it's the last thing you're gonna see.
Doc Holliday: McLaury, seeing your face would be a pleasant change. I understand most of your enemies got it in the back.

Re: Best Kukhri
Gonna make a few enemies now..lol I want to try the traditional style kurki but am put off by the handles and sheaths...so I cannot comment on them but I WILL buy a custom one from kukri house soon!...Anyway I have this one, not everyone's taste but cuts well SK5 version does not have a convex edge (i.e this one) so I would imagine this would do even better with a nice convex edge on it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtQKv...eature=related

Re: Best Kukhri
Khukri house will put a western sized handle on any blade you like.
I had about 20 of theirs at one time, a couple from Tora, and a few with no known history.
Never had one from Himalayan Imports though as they always seemed overpriced.Ruin is the Devil's work, consecutive and slow

Re: Best Kukhri
The thing that puts me off with a place like that though is quality control, I saw a youtube review of the 15" defender kukri and I recall the fella saying the quality of that one was a fair bit different to his other kukri house "eagle" version IIRC...maybe im just use to western factory made ones....will buy one at some point and a Killa Zilla then do a chop off!

Re: Best Kukhri
Soupmonger had an 8 inch khuk from kukuri house. Two for one deal.
He stropped it , said it was the best chopper he'd come across and sold his Busse Battle Mistress.

Re: Best Kukhri
Tora Budhune for simply outdoors use it's the best chopper I have had my hands on,the handles are easily western sized .I have 9-5 in glove sizes and I had to sand the handle down a wee bit to make it comfortable hand

Re: Best Kukhri
The toughest will be the Busse Combat Killa Zilla (I or II).
Canīt say if itīs the best chopping, probably one of the best, but surely is the toughest.
Best regards,
Hugo.

Re: Best Kukhri
Oh no! It is like I have just discovered YouTube - there are some good vids there - and I just saw a vid of a Tora Krishna 28cm bladed chhuri

I just knew the relationship between me and my credit card was going to become tense soon as I started down this route

I've owned a few Kukri (s) but I'm down to a Tora British Army Issue and a massive old no name utility version made from a General Motors truck spring. I know because the GM logo is still on the blade!
The Tora Issue model is smaller than many people think a combat Kukri would be, but it really is just a big fighting knife and not a small sword. However I still find it ideal for all round utility work.
My old no-name one is a wide and ever so top heavy chopper that resists proper sharpening but will still happily chop through tanks.
And I'm still laughing about the Busse comment, it's a classic.

Re: Best Khukri
I honestly believe that, and it may sound a bit snobbish, is that only real Nepalese Khuk's have the proper blade geometry the tool was designed for.
I've compared a few cold steel and the Kabar model. Weight distribution was quite different. All khukuri shaped choppers work, but that's because it's a huge hunk of steel with an edge."Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end" Unknown
