Mammoth Ivory
The same friend that sent me the wood sent this to me also. The blue piece is not dyed, it's the color it was when dug up. I saw a picture of a bigger piece that was buried next to it and it's the same color

Re: Mammoth Ivory
I need to cut some of the blue ivory for I knife I'm starting soon for a young Recon Marine from our town that was wounded in Iraq and again in Afghanistan. The wounds from Afghanistan left him confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. He just returned home after almost a year in the hospital. The round went in through his left collar bone, took out part of his lung, damaged his spinal cord, and exited through his right shoulder. We've know his family for a long time. I hate cutting up mammoth because I worry about ruining it.

Re: Mammoth Ivory
I have used mammoth on a bowie knife and it is a bugger to work. A friend of mine advised me to soak it in super glue to stop it from cracking when drilling and that worked

God love him!a young Recon Marine from our town that was wounded in Iraq and again in Afghanistan. The wounds from Afghanistan left him confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life.
Is his name Paul by any chance?
I've read an article by a Marine wounded this way online, just wondered if it was him.
I don't know what to say... he's sacrificed so much, I can only hope that the rest of his life is very good indeed!Buck, Spyderco, Emerson, Magnus Hjelmgren, Helle, Lord Farqhuar, Zackerty, Murray Carter, Busse and James Wood owner

Re: Mammoth Ivory
Beautiful Blue Mammoth!
I have cut a bit of Elephant Ivory, Mammoth Ivory and Walrus Tusk in the past. What I did with mine was put them in a sealable dish with Mineral Oil in it and soak the ivory for a couple of weeks until no bubbles are present, works really well. I then take them out and wipe them down really well with a soft cloth and let them dry a bit. The pieces still take Cyanoacrylate glue for cracks when needed and will glue to whatever you are working on.

Re: Mammoth Ivory
That blue bit is stunning. I've seen blue mammoth before, but never so complete or so vibrant. Good friend you have there.
