fruitport vs scout
Evening all.
As above suggests, I am in a quandry about what to save up for next.
The candidates being the clip-point scagel fruitport or the GEC Northfields scout.
I have been drooling over both on knivesshipfree (what's the service like with this site?) And I just can't decided. It would be a useable edc blade.
I am so far struggling to find any comparative shots or reviews of either.
Does or has anyone owned both?
Cheers
Ps the scout would be the single bladed slippy in stag

Re: fruitport vs scout
Ok, I have both so here are some of my thoughts....
The Fruitport is, in my opinion a classy, gentlemen's EDC slipjoint which will work a bit harder if you ask it to. My reasoning behind this is that it has a long, narrow frame which makes it feel quite delicate in hand. However the convex grind, together with a strong, tight pivot means it can handle tougher tasks if you ask it to. For example I have whittled with mine but you don't have the grip which something like the #72/3 Northfield pattern offers. The Northfield Scout feels more like a working EDC pattern to me, great in the hand together with linerlock and backlock options. I also have a Scagel Barehead jack which comes with a very usable clip/pen blade combo too.
I've always had good service with Knivesshipfree, I'll PM you some other American Great Eastern Cutlery dealer contacts so that your options are wider

Go look at this -

The best trad-looking, production, single blade slipjoint folder there is or has been - rare now, too - they were cheaper, a bit.Last edited by Noddy; 09-02-12 at 01:05 AM.

Re: fruitport vs scout
Isn't it? Thought it was the same size as the GEC 73 and Fruitport

Re: fruitport vs scout
My Fruitport blade measures just under 3-1/8" from bolster to tip with the cutting edge coming just under 3-13/16". My #73 drop point measures 3-1/16" from bolster to tip with a cutting edge of 3-13/16". It depends on your interpretation but i would err on the side of caution and assume these are both not legal EDC either

Happy to be corrected.

You are indeed right, Sam, and the Northwoods is the same size.
Personally, it wouldn't affect my carrying it as edc in the UK, but three inches is three inches. That's me personally though

Re: fruitport vs scout

There is also the Schatt and Morgan Heritage series to look at. Their bone jack is lovely and well inside the parameters.
There is also their single blade option. My spearpoint is at home at the moment, so I can't do a measure. And, you may not like the swedging. It is an inexpensive knife in this area of the market, and the swedges, whilst spot on probably would have benefited from one more operation - but you can DIY that.
The clippoint in this range is sublime. It has a 3 3/4" frame though, so you might be looking at the same issue as with the Scagel, GEC and Northwoods
Take a look at the Northwoods gunstock jack - I see them at Knives Ship Free in stag and they are sub 3" - Cumberland Knife Works also has a delicious example in Italian jigged bone - they may not actually have that in stock though, so try and get a firm answer from them one way or another before ordering.Last edited by Noddy; 10-02-12 at 07:18 PM.
