Re: Knife, Axe, Tomahawk or whatever throwing thread.

    Thanks again John,
CS hawk sounds like the way to go then.

Just seen these on HH would they be any good do you think, they are certainly cheap enough to knock one up to have a go

    Steve,

Out of the six available at HH the only one I would choose is the coffin handled one.

Ideally you are looking at a knife about 12" long. The coffin handled one has a very substantial tang as opposed to the other Bowie versions which look very thin to me.

Don't forget that this knife is not just a blade it has to be able to stand up to a lot of abuse as you learn your correct distance to throw it. Personally, I would round the end of the handle off to a semi-circle that will just roll out of your hand.

Obviously the guard and handle have to be really well attached and the handle material has to be tough stuff. A further tip is not to take the handle material right to the end of the handle. Leave a small bit of tang exposed as it saves wear on the end of the handle material which invariably gets bashed about.

By the way, that is a good find. Thank you. I might try one of these out myself.

Actually I've just look at the specs and reviews on the 8 1/4 Bowie and that looks okay as well.

Re: Knife, Axe, Tomahawk or whatever throwing thread.

See i told you John could explain it better than myself.

If you are adding your own scales to this knife think "shock absorption" some folks will remake the guard out of much thicker brass so it will take the hammer and also use pieces of leather above below and around the guard which just allows that bit of give. Leather is a popular choice for handles held on with brass rivets as again it will flex instead of break.

I envisage a quiet day at work today so i will trawl across some forums and get pictures up.

Incidentally if you are on Facebook we have club page over there with loads of pictures on. There are about half a dozen groups on there that would really give you some good idea's.

Let me know and i'll add you to our group, then the world of throwing will open before your eyes!

This one is made by a well known (In America) custom throwing knife maker

And this beauty is made by a club member who does unbelievable work on his throwing knives

They all look like sturdy bits of kit Ark, I have a half completed Bowie-ish blade made from a farriers rasp kicking around somewhere, I may just get around to making it up and having a chuck :-)

Somehow managed to miss this the first time, but may be of interest to you guys as it has a coffin handle like the smaller one.

It's a tad long for me, Steve, and, like I said, I prefer a smooth release from a semi circular handle head.

the length could be ok for mountain man as the idea is for easiness you trim your hawk handle down so the 1 spin hawk distance is the same as your 1 spin knife distance. A longer blade means you won't have to trim the hawk handle down too much.
Of course the downside to that is you are standing further away from the target!!!

I have to agree with John that the handle really needs to smooth and rounded, that end profile will not make it easy to release the knife
