I only use an electric water stone for sharpening, not grinding the profiles or hollow/flat bevels. My sharpener does a good job for my tools and knives but I have to be careful not to over sharpen and ruin the edges or the stone's squareness

    Re: grinding wth electric wetsones

i was looking at tormek . they are not like the old school ones i can find them . they run slower and have honing wheel for the polishing of the edge . they offer some nice grades of stones upto 6000gr japanese wet stones . i dont think they would be much use to you stuart i think you would wear one out a day !! but they have alot of adjustment and jigs to get the grind right
    http://www.tormek.com/en/machines/index.php
i understand they are for final edge work realy , but so far knife making ahs been addapting machines to what i need rather than being able to buy what i need if you follow , that and i cant grind at all . i can file and sand by hand but simply can not grind , anything that helps me do that has to be a wise inverstmant ?
    all the best , matt.

Matt for grinding you need an Aly Maxi grinder runnning 50mm x 2000mm belts preferably ceramic and use Trizac fine belts to get to near mirror polish
they run at just under £1000 i think but for the numbers you have been talking about will quickly recoup that.
A tormak for this job is a waste of a fair chunk of moneyit would take hrs to grind a scandi
there best is Low speed 220gt I use high speed ceramic 36gt for inital removal (then 120gr Cr 220grCr 400-1300gt Trizac)

the Ali will do 3-5 an hr with a quick buff on a polisher mop for mirror finish hair popping sharp scandi

The modern wetstones are really only for sharpening. The surface speed is very low, so the metal removal rate is also slow. Obviously the water cools the edge to prevent loss of temper.

I think the modern stones will run significantly faster than natural stones, but the "wet" part sets an upper limit on the speed.

If they ran fast enough to shift much metal, they'd fling the water off and effectively become drystones.

    Re: grinding wth electric wetsones

thanks guys , i take it all on board . it would be for the hand forged knives not the volume knives duncan your right i think you would go insain with the little whetstones grinding them !!
i dont know if its nastalga or what but i realy would like to revamp one of the old shefield ones if i could find one . i think it would be great on my hand forged to keep it old school .
but logic say that stupid and the modern grinders with the modern abrasives have to be the way forward .
there must be loads of the sheifeld ones about sitting there ready to be bought back to life . i wonder where they all are , and how you would get stones for them ?

The other thing is most of them would leave you with a hollow ground blade

Hi Matt I have a cheap Tormek copy and i sometimes have trouble sharpening some knives because the machine body gets in the way of the knife handle. If you wanted to use a similar set up you would need either a large wheel or a smaller machine body with a belt and pulley and shaft setup with the motor slung quite low under the setup
